Most, if not all, vets get paid a yearly salary. The mean for a starting veterinary fresh out of college is about $43,000 a year. This is not really much if you think about all the education that they've had to go through (4 years college undergrad., 4 years vet school, a couple years of internship). Becoming a vet is really tough, the pre-reqs are very difficult and admission to vet school is more competitive then med school. Trust me, I know.

My vet charged over $400.00 for a sick cat (fluids, shot), vet check and blood work on my dog. This included a following up for the cat and more fluids. He checked and scraped both animals teeth and thoroughly examined both animals all three times and spent at least 30 minutes talking to me each visit, oh and gave me a small sample of catnip for the cat. He pays a vet tech to come in several days a week. He owns the small practice locally and works 2/3 days a week at an emergency clinic. All this doesn't include calls he'll take if I have a question and the call he made to go over the results of the blood work. NOT MUCH I'd say.

Most vets aren't paid hourly, they get a set salary. The salary is based on the size of the vet clinic, if the vet is a specialist in a particular field, area of the country, rural or city, large or small animal practice or both, etc.
