Yes I have. And to me, it raises an interesting dilemma that seems to never really be solved. Jews have lived in places, like Afghanistan, for centuries, in this case over 1400 years. Clearly the history is rich, yet through religious oppression and suppression the present is arid. The Jewish population there dwindled, as they realized that there was no future for them there. They all recognized that the future is in Israel, or temporarily in a neighboring country. Yet what is a Jew to do? Forget about the last 1400 years of history? Clinging to our heritage is what kept us a people for so long, as I'm sure clinging to their particular Afghani traditions was what kept those Jews a cohesive community. Thus is the truth of the Jewish diaspora. We may settle in a land, we may call it home for millenia and lay down roots deeper than the oldest tree, yet it will never truelly be home nor will it be our future. Some day those roots will whither aways, whether it be from lack of sustaining rain or the acts of a hostile gardner. It seems only in Israel is it worth banking on our future, as painful as it may be to leave our present.

I remember seeing him in the news before his wife and children all moved to Israel and he stayed to look after a Jewish Shrine, which turns out more specifically to be a synagogue by the looks of the article.
