The vet says it will be 30 days before we know anything for sure, but I'm wondering if the fact that she feels pain and can move her tail indicates that the nerve damage is minor and can be repaired? Also, the pain she feels on her butt appears to be quite intense judging from her crying and there are times when she refuses to use her hind legs while walking. Also, she does not want to lay down and has slept while sitting. There's so little info on the Web about this that I'm hoping someone can help. Thanks

The injury appears to be where the tail and body meet,

An x-ray was taken and it came back negative, so the vet ruled out any broken bones.

Is the injury itself on the tail? If so, and she were my dog, there would be no question as to amputation right now. I wouldn't let her suffer at all.

If you decide to wait, you should ask your vet for steroids and pain killers. If he won't do that then find another vet.

Wow, that sounds terrible. I guess you will just have to rely on your vet's information - I don't know what to offer since I don't know what caused her injury.
My Sheltie was hit by a car when she was young, she was actually walking on a leash and pulled so hard her head came out of the collar and she ran right out in front of a car! It fractured her back leg. The nerve damage affected her tail and she never grew any hair back on her tail. Looks really strange, especially on a sheltie.
Other than what you are already doing, give her lots of love and comfort. Your vet did tell you that you can give her baby aspirin for pain, right? Or gave you a prescription for her?
It is awful to watch our pets in pain and not be able to help them. Good luck to you.

I would be more concerned about the Anal area than the tail, the fact she will not lay down and not using her hind legs. I also had a Pom with a tail problem, he just wouldn't let you touch it. Did the Vet Ex ray the hips and rear end of you dog?
Pom's are bad about throwing their Hips and Elbows out of socket. If it were my dog I would probably get a SECOND OPINION.

alot of time it depends on how the injury occured in the first place . and if the vet feel that the injury will heal itself . if not then maybe an amputation of the tail might have to be done . I would listen to your vet . good luck .
