Phil - I think so too.....I'm thinking the pop needs to go to about a billion...it was about 1.5 billion in 1900, but the effects of industrialization had already started, so.............I also think no one will be willing to see that as a goal, on the other hand even non-war circumstances may force the change.

Is there any possibility that people in general will be able to make a shift to a simpler, natural, far more local life? that is, without being forced to by circumstances?

There are things we can do to prevent sever damages but living an American life-style won´t take more than another 20 years to pollute the whole planet almost totally. The othe person claimed against conservatives and so on...actually it has been the new technologies causing more trouble. I am not against birth-control. Being a woman and an environmental concerned person I would do anything to stop poisoning the planet but living a conservative and natural way of life is the most sustainable one.

Every level of modern life can continue without damaging or poisoning the planet. It just takes brains and work. Just because you cannot think of a way to do it does not mean it cannot be done. Just because you don't want to work on improving technology doesn't mean others don't.

One thing that would help would be if humans got their numbers back down to some kind of reasonable population. But there are too many religious nuts, conservatives, etc who reject science for that to happen.

What will eventually happen is world war. Humans would rather fight that conserve. Sad but true.
