So many of us see it as an opportunity to attack the questioner in a personal way. Why do so few of us stop to consider that a good question is a good question and perhaps the one who posted it is actually exposing the subtleties in such a way as to stimulate interest in the actual inquiry instead of trying to pick a fight?

I agree with you. Many questions might seem petty and uninteresting, but this doesn't mean that the asker was insincere. If it appears that the person has asked an offensive question just out of ignorance, I try to give a diplomatic answer. I figure that it's much more likely to change someone's mind if I show him/her respect rather than name-calling or offense.

There are other questions which are obviously posted as jokes or satire. I find it completely fine to answer these in the spirit in which they were given.

Sometimes but not always a person can hide behind an Avatar and say what they are truly thinking to people they will never have to confront. A good thing? A bad thing? Depends on which side of the prism you are looking through. I'd never fight with you. You're a sweetheart? But, I will ask questions that might bring out something new and I think that's good. As long as I can hide behind my Avatar maybe I don't care? Or maybe I do? We all get slapped a few times. That's the risk you take if you care enough to post the vary best and we do.

Unless the question is something like "In 1492 who sailed the ocean blue" you're going to get a lot of opinions. Most of the questions on Y!A are opinion-based and therefore get opinion-based answers.

I usually only see it happening when the question is phrased in an "offensive" (can't think of a better word) way
