There is a blood test for depression, but it is not very effective. Some people who are depressed are negative.

These are some symptoms:

Loss of pleasure in formerly pleasurable activitiies, may even stop doing them or leaving the house.
Irritability, grouchy.
Sad, unhappy most of the time.
Constant worrying, anxiety.
Too much sleep, sleep during the day, feelings of lethargy, can't get moving, procrastinating.
Loss of appetite.
It usually follows a major life event like loss of family member, loss of job, major life change, loss of spouse, divorce, etc.

Usually four or five out of six I believe would qualify as clinical depression. If you respond well to an anti-depressant, that usually clinches it for a doctor, but know that there are many other illnesses that may accompany (be co-morbid) with depression. You should also get a complete physical. Many physical ailments may lead to depression, such as diabetes, heart disease, diet, head injury, other injury, etc.

There are two different kinds of depression. The environment kind and the chemical imbalance in the brain kind. Yes, a doctor and/or physiologist can tell if your depressed. There is no blood test for depression. Different tests are done tho as a process of elimination. Environment kind is curable without drugs and the chemical imbalance is not.

They take a standard symptom inventory of your behavior and thinking and problem-solving patterns.

If you meet the criteria then you are considered depressed.
They may also test your blood for hormone levels.

The best combination for treatment of depression is usually pills to temporarily ease the symptoms and therapy to treat the mental behavior that has led to the depression.

You can also begin your own treatment by examining how you think about things.
If you are overly dramatic or blame others or black and white about your problems then you need to find more positive ways of managing how you think about your problems.
