The Bible says that when a person dies, “his spirit goes out, he goes back to his ground.” (Psalm 146:4) Does this mean that a disembodied spirit literally departs and lives on after a person’s death? That could not be, for the psalmist next says: “In that day his thoughts do perish” (“all his thinking ends,” The New English Bible). What, then, is the spirit, and how does it ‘go out’ from a person at the time of his death?

In the Bible the words translated “spirit” (Hebrew, ru′ach; Greek, pneu′ma) basically mean “breath.” Thus, instead of “his spirit goes out,” the translation by R. A. Knox uses the phrase “the breath leaves his body.” (Psalm 145:4) But the word “spirit” implies much more than the act of breathing. For example, in describing the destruction of human and animal life at the time of the global Deluge, Genesis 7:22 says: “Everything in which the breath of the force [or, spirit; Hebrew, ru′ach] of life was active in its nostrils, namely, all that were on the dry ground, died.” So “spirit” may refer to the life-force that is active in all living creatures, both humans and animals, and that is sustained by breathing.
What, then, does it mean when Ecclesiastes 12:7 states that when a person dies, “the spirit itself returns to the true God who gave it”? Does this mean that the spirit literally travels through space into God’s presence? Nothing of the sort is implied. Since the spirit is the life-force, it “returns to the true God” in the sense that any hope of future life for that person now rests entirely with God. Only God can restore the spirit, or life-force, causing a person to come back to life.

Read Luke 11:24-26, and Matthew 10:28.
While in the body it is the soul, when the body dies the soul is released and it returns to spirit. No spirit has ever died, they are clean, unclean, or evil.

The clean spirit has a choice of being born again, the unclean spirit has no choice, it must be born again.
The evil spirit can not be born again.
However, depending on how unclean the unclean spirit is, it must take 7 other spirit more wicked then itself, but if that unclean spirit is exceedingly wicked, an evil spirit may become one of the 7.

The body dies the spirit does not, it is the spirit that is quickeneth the body profits nothing. The actual Words Jesus spoke they feed the spirit.

I always thought of the soul as a set of "ribs"...like in the human body (not the kind you barbeque). I don't know why I have that "picture" in my head. I always thought that our sins stick to our soul. Is a spirit and a ghost the same? Does the Holy Spirit have a soul? That part in the Bible...when Jesus died on the cross..they said "the ghost left him"...guess it depends on which interpretation of the original scriptures you use.Seems like I can only answer this with more questions..sorry.

The soul is ones disembodied state (Revelation 6:9, 20:4); this is different than one's "spirit"... one's "spirit" is who we are, what we like, what we find funny, our personality.

The soul, belongs to God (Ezekiel 18:3,4); it possesses immortality (Matthew 10:28); the soul leaves the body at death (Genesis 35:18).

The soul has abilities which include: having faith (Hebrews 10:39); and love of God (Luke 10:27).

The duties of the soul are to love God (Deuteronomy 6:5); serve God (Deuteronomy 10:12); store the Word of God (Deuteronomy 11:18) and get wisdom (Proverbs 19:8), to mention a few.

The soul has enemies such as fleshly lusts (1 Peter 2:11), evil environments (2 Peter 2:8); sin (Leviticus 5:4-17); adultery (Proverbs 6:32); evil people (Proverbs 22:24,25).

The souls of the righteous are kept by God (Psalm 121:7); they are purified (1 Peter 1:22); they will reign with the LORD Jesus Christ (Revelation 20:4).

The soul of the wicked desires evil (Proverbs 21:10); it delights in it (Isaiah 66:3); its ultimate fate is distress (Romans 2:9).

Soul is entered in the fetus when it is four months old. After a person dies soul is kept at a certain soul holding place called 'BARZAG' as teaches Islam.

Souls of Messengers/Prophets of God and Martyrs who die fighting or working for the cause of God, God sends their souls straight to heaven. Their souls are not held in 'BARQAGH'.

Souls of really bad sinners and murderers of innocent people are punished in the their graves entire period from their death until their resurrection for the Day of Judgment. Those who were decent people and God is pleased with them for their good work and worship ping God, they lay in graves sleeping comfortably without any punishment. Angels open a window in their graves that leads to heaven and they get comforting breeze from heaven until they will be resurrected for their Judgment. This is what Prophet of Islam taught and all Muslims believe.

There is not too much we know about soul. God didn't tell enough about soul. Most of what we hear are people's own thoughts. Prophet Mohammad said, I wish God had told me more about soul.

The spirit is to the soul what the blood is to the body.

We are spirit, we have a soul, and we live in a body.

Our souls live forever either with God in heaven or separated from him in hell, after we die.

This verse speaks of the body going back to earth after the spirit leaves. Hence, a body without the spirit do not have thoughts.

What's your point?

You soul is your spirit. It goes to heaven/ hell after it leaves the body. It says that, When their spirit departs, they return to the ground. This means that when their spirit leave their body, they die, their body returns to the ground.
