Probably a course in writing. Not many departments like the use of "2, and 4 and 1st" in place of to, for and first.

Usually a college will have something along the lines of police science, I recommend getting your 4 year degree right away instead of an associates degree(2 year).

How long it takes an application to get accepted depends on the police department. Remember they are actually looking for reasons to get rid of you at first so make sure everything is filled out completely, neatly and is spelled correctly. After you apply there usually will be a written test, a physical test, an oral interview and then a back round check. You're added to a list and when your number comes up your hired.

If you make it through all of the above congratulations. Now you attend a training academy that teaches basic policing functions. The time spent at recruit school (academy) is different for each state. After the academy your placed in "field training". This also lasts for different amounts of time (usually 14 weeks) and will cover all the shifts of the department you got hired at. After field training you're assigned to a shift and hopefully you'll make it through your probationary period (1 year to 18 months).

When you first start it's the greatest thing in the world. Most people say they would be willing to work for free.

As a police officer myself, I think I waisted my time in a criminal justice course. Everything you learn in a criminal justice major you're going to re-learn in the police academy.
I would take an Independent studies course where you can take your own classes as you choose. English classes will help with your writing skills. Reports look sloppy if you can't spell and put sentences together. Math classes. It sounds dumb, but if you have to add things up really fast (for accident reports, radar training) it will be useful. Any weight training classes your college might offer will help you prepare for the hard physical part of the academy. Computer classes will help with your computer skills making it easier to type up reports. Once you become a police officer I would recommend going back to college to take criminal justice classes. Laws are updated every year and some things like Juvenile Laws, Constitutional Law classes will help you keep up and elaborate things you already learned.
