I took my 16 m/o daughter to my mother in law's smoothie shop. I asked my MIL to watch the baby for a min. When I came back my daughter was picking up a potato chip from the floor and putting it in her mouth. I said "No, baby, you don't eat from the floor, you can get sick". My MIL told me "but if you don't let her get some germs she can get sick too". I thought "wtf?", I mean, I am not a "germophobic", but eating from the floor at a public place??? Who knows what's on that floor, all kinds of people walked in and out and who knows where THEY have been walking ...
Am I over reacting?

Umm, I don't think your daughter should be eating any meals at Granny's house in the future! Now, all joking aside, you're right. While keeping a child in a plastic bubble isn't healthy, it's certainly not healthy for her to eat chips off the floor. Who knows where the chip came from? It could have fallen out of someone's mouth. And who knows what the customers have tracked in - dog crap, chemicals, etc! So no, you aren't overreacting.

I don't think you are overreacting at all. At home the 5 second rule may apply. But you are right, in a public place there is no telling what type of germs could be picked up. If you MIL wants her to build up her immune system let her eat some dirt from you back yard or something like that! :-)

Your MIL is right but SO ARE YOU. Yes, if you keep your child too well protected from germs, you don't give their immune system a chance to grow, but hell...they get exposed to plenty of germs by playing in the dirt outside, they don't need to eat a damn potato chip off a public thoroughfare. I don't think you're overreacting at all.

I'm certainly not one to make a fuss about a bit of dirt, you should see my kids at home, they are FERAL lol, but I'd never let them eat food off a floor that has had a hundred different dirty shoes on it.

not at all, my son touches the carts at walmart and restrurant tables all the time and the kids at his daycare sneeze all over him. It's really quite discusting. just think of all the other places she touches and stuff she breathes in there are plenty of germs out there. And unfornunately its really hard to protect your kids from all germs. She is right to let her be exposed to germs but not from the floor. We have place in town called the Playstation an its like an indoor playground and kids take off their shooes at th first desk then go play and go in to the bathroom in socks and then back in to play, that is gross too.

My grandmother used to say a little dirt never hurt anyone(And that we eat a bushel of it over our lifetime), but there is a vast difference between a little dirt, and the floor of a business. You have no idea where people have been walking, they could have walked through something nasty in the grass, walked in and out of unclean places, so no you were not over-reacting.

No I don't think you're overreacting that sounds really gross and I would have reacted the same way if I saw my children eating off the floor in a public place.

you are NOT over reacting. that is gross. kids need to have a strong sense of what to eat and what NOT to. and importantly, your daughter needs to see a united front. i would try to calmy talk this over with her. and definately get your hubby to support you and do not attack the MIL, she probably doesn't realize how extremely ridiculous that germ theory is. good luck! stick to your guns, it's your baby!

No, your not! That's gross. The person who walked on the floor right before the chip fell could have had dog poop on their shoe.
