There is a long and rich tradition of Christian contemplative prayer that is very similar to the simple principles of Zen meditation practice. Classic examples from Chrisianity include the anonymous "Cloud of Unknowing" and the writings of John of the Cross. A modern-day parallel is Centering Prayer as taught by Fr. Thomas Keating ("Open Mind, Open Heart").

The heart of Zen is identical in spirit to the Psalmist's verse, "Be silent and know I am God."

While it comes from a culture from the other side of the world and uses a different language, Zen understands that the Divine is present in all things -- and that it is a "grace" to allow ourselves to be accepted by That Truth.

It is not something we create and make up. It is not something we make happen.

(And since Zen, like much of Buddhism, is not a tradition that requires acceptance or rejection of a set of prescribed beliefs, many Christians who understand it know it to be a resource that enhances their own spiritual faith practice without being some kind of "competition" thing.)

I think that it is because the average person hears about zen, and zazen from magazines and TV shows. Every article and TV show that I have seen regarding zen/zazen represents it as a health benefit. It has been shown to us as something that is for our body and minds.

Because of this, people do not feel the threat of their religion being challenged. At one time (the 1960-1970's), people associated zen with mysterious masters and yogis. living in the mountains, who seemed to threaten traditional values.

Today, people see zen/zazen as something that can fit into their western lifestyle and not as something that poses a threat to their beliefs.

Because they don't read the Bible everyday like they should, The Bible says faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God, Romans 10:17, if we don't read our Bibles and Pray and go to Church we will not grow into mature Christians and then we can easily be dragged off in another direction. Also not everybody that says they are a Christian is one. Remember Matt. 7:23, And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
So we see that not all that say they are Christians really are. Saving by Grace has nothing to do with zen, two totally different points of view.

Sees too many Christians are dis-satisfied with Christian
priests, pastors and what ever else you call them. They are desperate to join any religion without fully understanding to try a different route for their peace of mind. Isn't it?

Perhaps they are merely searching, like me. Many Buddhist thoughts go hand in hand with the teachings attributed to Jesus, so it really isn't that far a stretch.

I think people are searching for the Peace that their religion does not offer. It's like being Married and looking for something that is missing in the relationship,so then you cheat.

They do not know their Bible very well and/or they do not understand what they are doing. Most Christians, I would have to say, do not read and study their Bible like they should therefore they become suseptible to half truths.
