One of the best ways would be word of mouth. Talk to a favorite teacher that you had in school, a coach or someone you know that would give you a favorable recommendation.

Do you have a resume? Prepare one. Even if you do not have a lot of working experience. I've attached a link that will help with the resume.

Is there an entry level job that you want to do? Then go after that kind of job in the area of town you want to work. You can walk in and express your interest and leave a resume. Hey, I know it can be tough. Face to face contact is so much better than the phone and the internet.

One last thing is signing up with a temp agency.

I do hope you plan to continue with your education... College or trade school.

Best to you!

If you want a sales/retail job for now, your best bet is to go from store to store - don't just stop at the ones that have 'help wanted' signs, but you choose the stores you want to work for, go in, and ask for an application to fill out. Many of these places hire year round, and often don't advertise. If you have friends that are employed, see if they can get you the name of the hiring manager, and possibly an appointment, or send a resume. Receptionist jobs are also usually available to people with limited experience but good phone and communication skills, so if you use the internet, use that as a search parameter. Receptionist positions are often a good 'foot in the door' and a way to move up in an organization. Good luck, I'm sure you'll find something soon.

First of all, lili-rose, you'd better be going to college, too! I've been following your questions for a while and felt bad for you when you had such a high GPA but didn't get any scholarships. Are you enrolled at Cal State? I know I'm nosy, but I'm a teacher, after all.

Hopefully, you're looking for a job to help make your way through school. If so, there are jobs on campus you can apply for through the office of student financial aid. There are also a lot of jobs around campus. You can find them by searching the newspaper want ads and, yes, by checking out "help wanted" ads in windows. You can also find good jobs by going through temporary employment agencies. Look in the phone book yellow pages under "employment agencies."

Let us know if you weren't able to start college because of the lack of financial help. I have a million resources for college money I could help you access.

Good luck!

I have been on the job hunt for a few years. I work at Movie Gallery now. I want to move up to Office Max, another retail store.

The first thing I did was get a good resume typed up and printed on nice paper. Then, I went into Movie Gallery and filled out an application. After that I gave them my resume and I got the job.

If you would really like to impress employers, type up a letter of application and find out who the store manager/main manager of the establishment and address it to him or her at the store. Be sure to include a return adress at the top, an inside adress, greeting i.e. Dear Mr. Smith, body, salutation >>>> (hit enter four times) and type your full name. Sign in cursive in the space. If you would like, type "Enclosure: Resume"

Even more, ask your contacts if they would write a recommendation letter for you. You can put this under the "Resume" line. Then what I did was buy a set of nice envelopes that could hold my resume, letter of app, and letter of rec and then send it to the estabilshment/company.

In the interview, make eye contact and look and sound confident. Sell yourself on your skills and abilities. Give good answers.

Good luck!

Use the internet but go directly to the company’s site and see what they are looking for. Try rental car companies, hotels, department stores like Target or WalMart…
