Actually, I'm pretty sure that the tradition of taking off a hat comes from before the times that guns were invented. At any rate, it's considered a symbol of respect. In school it's good for the students not to wear hats because the teachers can see their faces better and therefore be more aware of how the students are doing. It also prevents cheating.

Taking off the hat has nothing to do with proving you have no gun. It started as a sign of respect long before guns were invented.

There are still some little guns, such as derringers, that people can hide beneath their hats. If you have a really big head, you could even hide a .45 or a .38 special under your hat. It is best to take it off so that the cops won't tase you.

Where?
In school?
They don't let you wear hats in school as they are a distraction for you and other people, they're abnormal and therefore attract attention.

During ceremonies?
As a sign of respect for the dead/elder/people of importance.

The reason you listed has no bearing on todays society, it's not a safety issue anymore.

Although in the aiport it would be WAY to easy to hide a knife/gun/pointy object under your hat, size would not be a factor.

Be more spicific on your next question.

Hats are taken off because they are outerwear, like jackets and coats. A gentleman removes his hat indoors and sets it aside, checks his hair in a nearby mirror if possible and remains bareheaded indoors.

Exceptions to this rule are: ladies, men wearing religious headcoverings, actors in costume.

It's a sad sight to walk into a home or restaurant and see the menfolk, mostly young, wearing baseball caps. I wonder why they feel manners aren't important.

It has always been about good manners and respect for a man to remove his hat indoors or in the presence of a lady. Women wore their hats as part of their outfit or ensemble and were not expected to remove them. It's pretty simple stuff.

I like that men still take their hats off when entering buildings. It shows respect.

Just like taking off sunglasses. It shows that you are not trying to conceal your identity. It is a way for people to connect with one another.

How do you feel when someone covers half their face with a scarf? Do you find them approachable?
I dont think they are as approachable when they look so mysterious and concealed.

Most times people would take off their hats out of respect, in church, in presence of ladies, in restaurants, etc.
Its just a sign of respect and old tradition.
