I've been with my boyfriend for 4yrs. and the most romantic thing that he's ever done for me was to take me on a picnic in central park, bought me a dress and a dinner in the city all for my birthday. But I wish that he would be more romantic for me more often. Im not asking for him to go all out everytime! I just like the little sweet things too and something big once in a while. He wants to be more romantic but he feels as though he doesn't know how. Any ideas to help???

might I add that he is very affectionate with me, but he just doesn't put any real thought into anything romantic

You seem to have ideas of what you want so do some of those romantic things for him and he will get the clue.
I'm not the most romantic guy either but that has always worked on me. Kinda makes me feel like I should recprocate, but not in a guilty way.
I bet it works.

Well...you picked the WRONG GUY. If romance was important to you, that should have been on your red flag list 4 years ago. If a guy is not romantic...then he is not a romantic guy. That is just how he is, you can't change him.
You could whine, and complain and cry and try to force him to be more romantic. And being forced by you he might be able to fake it for a while. Until he figures out that love is not being forced to do something by the other person.
You could always tell him what to do. It's not as romantic as the 'pure from his heart surprise to you' kind....but if you can forget that then it will work. Just tell him what you would like...IN DETAIL..no vague stuff. Write it down if you have too(you can make it all cute).
And you could always bribe him. Again not the best way to go..but it works. Do something sexual for him, whatever his fantasy or dream is or such....in exchange for the romance. He should be able to do the romance to get sex. Even better if it's the sex stuff that you would 'never' do(until now).
You don't happen to know a romantic guy friend that can give him tips do you. Again it would be fake, but as long as you can forget that part....

tell him that you would love just a simple rose once in a while, or a nice warm kiss one the cheek with an affectionate hug. just tell him how you would love to feel inside when he does things
