Yucatan Mexican peninsula and/or Cuba are both no more than 100 miles far from the USA Key West, FL shores.

I might conclude that the easiest and cheapest way to como ilegally to the USA is by the Florida Stretch by boat.
Maritime coyotes charge lower fees to assist undocumented Cubans, Mexicans, Haitians, Domincans, Venezuelans, Colombians, Central Americans etc to come here ilegally and pay taxes legally.

It is easier to come across the Mexican border.

If you are coming from the Yucatan Peninsula by boat, you are talking roughly 90 miles of open sea between the Yucatan and Cuba and another 90 miles of open sea between Cuba and Florida. While, in theory, you could have a decent boat stuffed with numerous immigrants to make it affordable, most people using boats (primarily Cuban and Haitian refugees) have not had particular solid boats. If you are using a simple motor boat as your primary transport, 180 miles by sea is rather far.

Crossing the Mexican border is primarily a land route than can be walked across in several places. While not easy, it is possible to hitchhike, bus, or otherwise get to Northern Mexico and then walk (or buy a spot in the back of a truck from a "coyote") across the border in an isolated area.
