SURE it WILL help, why do ya doubt it? I am avid orator myself and there is nothing like overcoming yr public speaking shyness with replete practice and then feelin tall in class for enlisting words of appreciation for doin it....!
Go ahead with full confidence,it will definately give you a boost,I doubt you will chicken -out cuz the foremost step that you have taken shows that you are serious bout being a good speaker.
Just remember,no one is perfect on this front, after many stage appearances,I still do feel the tinge of nervousness prior to any speech,so we all have this to some extent.
When you do go onstage:take several deep breaths and tell yrself that you can do it better than the kid beside ya,you have nothing to loose but everything to gain from the experience.....just walk to the dias with head held high and firm strides,if you pretend to look confident, you will surely end up feelin confident and ooze loads of it,trust me!
All the best for yr endeavour!

Pick a topic that you feel comfortable with.
Write your speech with words you feel comfortable using.
The Internet is a great resource for examples.
Don't go any longer that you have to.
Practice in front of a mirror with a stop watch.
Move your eyes around the room with out really looking at anyone directly.
Make sure you take a deep breath, before you begin.
Even when you pull this off, it won't fix your phobia, but at least you'll be able to pass this class and save your GPA

It's great that you're taking a Public Speech class. It WILL definately help your shyness, but don't think it will eliminate it entirely. In time you'll learn about self confidence. You'll become less shy as time goes on from the social situations you will encounter. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with being shy.

It could help, but you will have to work hard at it. If your teacher will offer help outside of class time, take it. I suspect that you will not be an A student at this, but you will learn a lot from it, which oddly enough, is the point of going to school.

I had to deal with shyness when I took speech in high school and college. When it was allowed, I would take a humorous approach to my speeches. It helped me feel more at ease if I could make the audience laugh. The downside to this approach is that if you fail to make the audience laugh, it tends to hurt your self-confidence.

What is shy?

Shyness is a fear of what people will do in reaction to what you are, what you say, or what you do.

Ask yourself: What's the worst thing these people could do to me?

Imagine them all laughing. Imagine you picking yourself up by your bootstraps and saying, "What the heck! Since they all don't like me I don't care what they think anymore. I may as well do what I want." Then do it. Deal with it as if the worst has already happened. Drown the fear. When some of them don't react badly, be pleasantly surprised and relieved.

Don't be enslaved to what other people think about you. The root of being shy may be that you aren't sure who you are yet. Once you're sure, don't let anyone ever take that away from you.

It will help. I took a speech class my first year of college when I was still really shy and it helped me. If your classroom is set up for PowerPoint I recommend making a PowerPoint presentation for your first few speeches as it gets the eyes of the class off of you and onto the presentation.

Hey!

I joined Toastmasters 6 months ago. It is a public speaking group that meets once a week or every two weeks. Everyone is trying to improve themselves and everyone is very patient and wants you to succeed. It has been working for me in the sense that it has increased my self-confidence: i can articulate myself clearly and i am not lost for words any longer when i've got to speak up my mind at a meeting for example. However it has not changed my character, and i still feel more at ease observing people or being on my own than keeping conversation or been in a social setting...
