The impact of a tsunami is severe and long term. Buildings left standing may be unsafe, food and water distribution is unpredictable and the local water is not safe to drink. There is massive carnage and it takes months to find all the bodies of animals and humans in the large debris fields. These areas should be avoided if at all possible. Reconstruction often takes longer than a year and services in affected areas would be unreliable for at least a year.
