In the south - Agricultural and Mechanical College - it is mining in northern or western states. They were created under a federal law that provided land that could be sold or developed to fund the colleges, on condition that all males were required to participate in ROTC for 2 years. Texas A&M is one of the few colleges that still strongly supports the military program, which is no longer required, and is a bit weird because all the upper class members wear uniforms ALL the time that include highly polished knee high jack boots - The Corps of Cadets.

"It opened in 1876 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, the first public institution of higher education in that state. In 1963, the Texas Legislature renamed the school, Texas A&M University, to reflect the institution's expanded roles and academic offerings. The letters "A&M" no longer have any explicit meaning but are retained as a link to the university's past."

It is an abbreviation at the end of a place where you go to hide for four years so your parents don't find out you could'nt get into Texas!!
