The first thing I would do is call the police. This isn't a little fight between kids, you are describing a serious beating.

the second thing I would do is meet the parents of the six and talk with them. It will help me to know how hard to push when I get a sense of the parents. If they are defensive and unconcerned with my child then clearly the only way the 6 have a chance at getting on the right track is through the criminal justice system. Any other reaction from the parents is only going to help me deal with my pain and reach a point of forgiveness for the offenders.

The only way to true healing within my own family is to reach a point where I can forgive the thugs. Not forget, but forgive.

I've been beat up badly more than one, and knocked out. My face broke the windshield of a friends car. I still have scars from the escapades of my youth. I'm now in my 40's. You can't say there WILL be long term affects. that's medically not true. The human body has an enormous ability to heal. Bleeding from the ears and getting knocked out are not beyond permanent healing.

I am going to answer this with out a reference to the Jenna 6, it is assault plain and simple and should be dealt with as just that I think a min of 7 years in jail is more than appropriate.

Now with reference to the Jenna 6 those boys had no right regardless of what was put in a tree. These children are thugs plain and simple. What always gets to me is that race is only an issue when there are major consequences for some one, OJ Simpson, Rodney King, I am sure I could list others. It is the fall back card of many people who would rather not take responsibility for their actions. I was truly saddened that some one would put something like a noose in a tree it is a disgusting relic of a time in our history that unfortunately can never be erased but these 6 had a choice to either be a bigger person or to take matters in their own hands. Today words like n*gger are thrown around indiscriminately in music and movies, and that is accepted by society as the norm which to be honest is beyond me. I am not naive and know that racism still exists, but it has been a long time since slavery and segregation which to be honest unless you are a black woman or man in your 80's you have not truly experienced what racism is. So regardless of race they made a choice and should be punished for their actions, they are not heros, or victims they only perpetuate the negative stereotypes about their culture.

Ah this is a good question. I just wanted to say this much-

I'm of mixed race (but a lot of people think I am African American due to my skin color), when I was a teenager, I had to attend a school that was composed of primarily white supremicist kids. It was horrible. I was teased and tormented every day and very often a group of kids would follow me home to beat the crap out of me. No matter what I said to my parents, they just told me that if I ignored them then they would stop hurting me. I look back on what they did to me as a form of neglect. I believe that they should have done something instead of just sitting on their butts and telling me to ignore it. I wish all of those kids would have gotten put into jail for at least three to five years. What they did is wrong and it traumitised me for a big part of my life. If it were my kid that was the victim, I could never live with myself if I didn't do something. I would go directly to the authorities and press charges asap if someone hurt my kid the way those jerks hurt me. I'd try to get them as much time behind bars as possible. Those guys that hurt me back then will never know the pain and endless hours of counseling that I went through. Even to this very day it still hurts to think about it and I have a lot of repressed anger towards my parents because all they did was turn the other cheek.

I am of mix race as well
my parents will never have sit by and do nothing about it
I for one have 3 kids of my own and a 4th on the way
all I can say it wash out world because I though my children not to cause hurt of any kind to anyone, and my prayer is always please Lord don't let me cause someone to be my victim
so if anyone hurt my child or children and the law done nothing about it, then certainly I will make that person my victim in anger I will have my vangeance
I think as I get older and I look around and see violence I stop caring also (bad I know maybe it is homone pregnant at the moment)
I am praying that God give me strengh everyday to change my thinking

O.K. The good thing about this country is the law suit. If the kid who gotten beat up by the 6 kids, they can pursue bodily injury and sue for medical bills out of pocket. In addition, they can pursue criminal law suit for mininal time in the community service or something. Both party were in the wrong, however to charges one of those six kids attempted murder is way out of line. Attempted murder means that someone cause extreme bodily injury where the victim can not recovery from the injury and left in a state of handicap. In this case it wasn't so, why attempted murder, simple as this, it's a small town and major are white and did you stop to think who were on jury duty? Was it all white? Not sure, might be due to the fact the town is majority white. If it was the other way around I think those kids would have gotten a lesser sentence.

My son got in a few fights at school and once knocked another young man out cold. My son also had injuries that required medical attention from that fight. They both were suspended from school and participation in sports for fighting and that was the end of it. No lawyers, no prison time, THE END.

I have wondered why the parents, the school system and local law enforcement involved in The Case We Won't Mention allowed this situation to escalate. What a mess.

First of all I'd like to say this is a personal issue to me. Considering it seems racism still exist in this world. Yes I did say RACISM. Come on give me a break a school fight and they trying to give that boy ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGES give me a freakin break. What kinda punishment are the others going to get? I hadnt heard of any punishment for them. Slavery days are long gone and over with. The guy or gal posting this comment can not even say this question isnt near in connection with the JENA 6. We all know it is. I am not saying what the 6 boys did was right NO it was wrong, absolutely wrong. However in addition it was ABSOLUTELY wrong for that boy and whoever else was involved to hang a Nussence from the tree also ( excuse my spelling) but thats absolutely ridiculous. Kids are an example of their parents. Now I am hearing the kids in that county that are not of color are driving with Ropes hanging outside their trucks driving the streets calling out racial slures like its alright to do. Come on now thats ridiculous. I think the six boys should be punished but I also think them boys that started it should get punished as well and life in prison or attempted murder is not an option. I pray for them boys that they get Justice because now over a simple fight their lives are on the line. Besides if that boy was hurt as bad as the charges that are being brought against them boys, then why did he attend the school function the same day. Ha, it sounds to me like it was a set up. Oh and to the questioner why they gotta be six THUGS? Cmon now give me a freakin break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, if I'd have found out my kid had maliciously intimidated the 6 kids, I'd have to put a little bit of responsibility on my own child. But 6 on 1 is unacceptable, no matter the reason IMO. I would want to see justice done.

And then we'd deal with what my kid had done as well.

In the Jena 6 case (which you're coincidentally SOOO similar to), I'd like to think I'd be fair enough to understand that my kid and his friends had instigated the issue in the first place.

The problem is that is only part of the story. Yes what those kids did is wrong, and that is not the way to deal with any issues and there should be consiquences for it. But I think that throwing the book at and going for maximum punnishment on six kids that used violence, and not disiplining the kids that threatened those six kids with nooses isn't the right way to go about it. If my kid was the one beaten, I would be upset at those six and want them punnished, but I would also be very dissapointed in my kid for threatening them (and thankful he is alive and well enough to attend a fun function that same night). It took two sides to start this fight, and both sides should be punnished.

For one, I would teach my son enough respect not to hang nooses from trees nor to point guns at people. If he did that, he wouldn't have to worry about six thugs, he'd have to worry about his mama.
However, if he did get his rear beaten by six thugs, I would expect at minimum community service by both my son and those six thugs, or some minimal jail time for ALL involved.
