Neuter your male. If you want to experience the birth of puppies, foster a pregnant female. There are enough Chihuahua’s dying in shelters and with rescue groups without you adding to it.

I breed chihuahuas and my suggestion to you is if you don't want a puppy get an adult that does well around other dogs. Chihuahuas tend to bond with other Chihuahuas. so I would get a female that would be a great match with your male. Get one that has a feisty personality too. Some of the Chihuahuas I have are shy, but they still have a feisty personality. If you are thinking about breeding them in the future I would get a female at least the same size as your male or a little bigger. The male should be smaller than the female so she won't have a hard time when she goes in labor. When you do find a female watch your male closely to see how he reacts to her. Let your male know that he isn't being replaced by the new dog so make sure you pet him a lot and give him doggie treats and show him that you still love him. You may have to separate them until you know how they will react with each other. always supervise them when they are together. It may take a while for your male to get adjusted to the new member of the family. every Chihuahua is different. Be patient and give it time. Good luck.

First realize that there are tons of dogs every year that are euthanized because no one wants them. The shelters and humane society put down literally thousands of dogs every week.

That being said, definitely do not just breed to another chihuahua because they are available. Bad traits in one dog will magnify if bred to another dog who has similar traits.

Do a lot of research to ensure you really understand what a chihuahua should be like - don't assume the knowledge. Then, talk with breeders and make sure the female chosen shows none of the same bad traits as your male, and vice versa. You need to make sure the dogs will complement and offset each other.

Bit-ch owners seek studs that compliment their females in conformation and pedigree, health history etc. There is a lot more to it then having a registered dog which by the way means nothing these days in the grand scheme of things because ANYONE with an extremely poor quality of any given breed can breed it to another registered poor quality dog that doesn't adhere to the standard of the breed and make more poor quality and or sickly registered dogs. AKC has no clue what is being bred and they rely on the integrity of the breeder which there are 90 breeders out of a 100 who don't give a shittt about anything other then producing a litter. They do not take pedigrees, health, conformation or any of the important things into consideration when they produce a litter. They are simply looking for a male or a female of the same breed. That’s not a good goal in dog breeding!
Unless your dog is shown in AKC conformation and has his health testing done. (not a check up at the vet) I am talking about OFA Hips, Cardio, Cerf, Thyroid... No one of any merit will want to breed to your dog. Being nice and having a few Champions in the pedigree is not enough to qualify him as a dog who is an outstanding representation of the breed.
Male owners don't pimp their dogs. Female owners see them at dog shows, spend hours studying pedigrees and researching health issues in certain lines and breed to improve upon what they have.
This is the only way to preserve the breed for what it is supposed to be.
You need to rethink the whole thing. Your dog does not likely have anything to offer the breed for betterment. He is a pet and he does not owe you anything.
A word about Champions in the pedigree... This is how back yard breeders and puppy mills promote their puppies. Using words like AKC registered.. (already been over that). And CHAMPIONS in the pedigree.
The fact of the matter is, that it only takes ONE generation of a bad breeding choice to screw a lot of things up. Breeding your dog to the wrong blood line can produce dogs with hip displasia, cardiomyopathy or any other health issue that is passed down. Neither dog has to have the health problem in order to pass it to their puppies once the genes link up.
Even more so what gets lost in these non shalant breeding decisions is the conformation of the dog and general breed type. The Champions in the back of the pedigree do not mean a dam thing if the dog standing in front of you does not adhere to the standard. Those Champions back there have NOTHING to do with your dog and how he looks if the people who have bred litters since then didn't give a rats assssss.
Just neuter him unless you are going to go through the necessary steps to protect the breed you obviously love. They are not ALL meant to produce litters.

You have read why NOT to breed your dog. I'm going to add a different aspect.

There are so many dogs including chihuahuas that are being put down everyday because of backyard breeders like yourself. The only reason to breed is for the betterment of the breed. And you don't have a clue as to the betterment. You got your dog from a BYB. How do I know that? Because you are trying to breed your pet quality dog (jus like hers was) for money and she didn't give you a spay/neuter contract . She didn't give a toot if you breed her puppies to death. She just wanted the money. UGH!!!!

To use your dog as a puppy money making machine is disgusting. They go threw a lot of pain just like you do while they are giving birth. SO PAINFUL!!!!!!! Why are you doing this to your poor dog????

Give it up and do your dog a favor and the rest of the world a favor and get her spayed for God's sake.

Are they of proper confirmation and health? What makes you think you need to reproduce them? I'm not being harsh. But really there isn't any money in it unless they have some sort of title or find uneducated people who are willing to purchase them. And if that happens then what? More puppies to be homeless possible health defects. And maybe not bettering the breed. I would love to have a baby from my Dobe he has the perfect personality but not the confirmation and it is too soon to tell about his health.

So you do your research.. You learn your standard, and you start interviewing breeders and you buy the very very best purebred female Chihuahua you can get.. Don't plan to breed her to your male tho, cause very likely he won't even be worthy ... Neuter him and start right with a high quality Chihuahua with a to die for pedigree..

Just look around in the paper or check with vets and see if they have breeders for chihuahua and get another chihuahua for it so it has a mate.

I have SIX purebred rescues that got lucky and ended up getting help. Unless you plan to do what the others suggested, don't breed your dog! Papers and being a purebred does not mean that your dog's puppies will live long, happy lives!

By your question I will assume that you are not a true breeder.
Has your chi recieved all his clearances? Health? Eyes? Hips? Elbows? Is he up to date on all his shots? Has he been wormed regularly? Is this dog a show champion? Is he such the epitome of chihuahuadom that you just HAVE to breed him? If not, don't. Too many dogs are euthanized each year. Don't contribute to the problem.
