Doing the traditional yoga as you describe, I believe, would be wrong. There are, however, Christian yoga classes and tapes. I would search for some of those.

God Bless.

Some Catholic apologists say to avoid yoga entirely because it's so closely linked to another religion. But it seems to me that you could find a way to do it strictly as a physical workout. There must be plenty of yoga instructors who don't include the religion in their routine. My instructors always included some religious elements from Indian religion. This might be different at gyms and other places.

One of the problems is that part of the practice is to empty your mind in meditation. (As I remember, this is in the last stage of the session.) The Christian approach is not to empty the mind but to allow God to enter it.

I'm catholic and I was just told to do yoga for some stress relief, I guess if you're doing it for non religious reasons it's OK. I haven't done it yet, but after some time on these boards I think I may be ready to give it a try. :-)

Particular physical exercises that are common to yoga and that help improve one’s health are perfectly fine. The problem is when a Christian participates in non-Christian Eastern spirituality. If your church is sponsoring an exercise class, it should call it simply an exercise class and omit confusing and possibly scandalous terminology such as yoga. If the church is sponsoring classes in non-Christian Eastern spirituality, that is a serious problem that should be discussed with the pastor.

It doesn't have to be viewed as a spiritual thing. You could do yoga just because its a wonderful form of exercise. Why not try it while reciting the rosary or some other form of religious doctrine?

if you are doing Yoga for the health benefits, there is no issue.

A Christian should never get involved with the spiritual side, most Christians do not have the knowledge to avoid the potential damage to their faith.
Anything new-agish should be avoided.

I suppose it would be okay to do the exercises but stay away from the teachings, they would do nothing to enhance your Catholic faith.
