Both cats R brothers & got along well until last night. Herf has gone to vet b4 & has gotten shots & Hermes didn't react much when Herf got back. Yesterday, Herf had shots and had an area shaved on his neck for blood to be drawn. They used alcohol on him; now Hermes think Herf's a strange cat because Herf smells different and Hermes now growls & hisses at Herf. Herf's baffled & just wants to hang with his brother. Last night, I had both cats on the bed, they were okay, then I guess Herf moved to close to Hermes & Hermes really growled @ Herf & they attacked each other - bad. I Have them separated now, but don't know what to do. I can't live w/ this feline discord and I'm beside myself. What if they don't get along ever again? I used kitty wipes to wipe them both down to see if it would help; it didn't. Any of you gone thru this b4? Hermes is acting better today but I'm afraid to let them be together yet. How can I get them to get over it and get along like they did 36 hrs ago?

The cat you took to the vet has different smells on him now. They'll readjust shortly I'm sure.

Herf smells different now, and Hermes doesn't understand this--his brother now smells like several other cats, the vet, the office, the chemicals, etc. If possible, give Herf a bath with baby shampoo or kitty shampoo to remove all of the odors. If YOU can't do it (just like I can't--mine turns into a wild man), take him to a groomer for a good bath, and pick him up right away so he doesn't get the scents of other animals back on him. This should take care of the situation. Good luck with these 2 loving each other again--they will.

Oh, and as a final thought---the next time that one of them has to go to the vet---take BOTH of them with you. They will both pick up the same scents and this little spat will most likely not occur again.

There is a spray at pet supermarkets ($20 a can in our area) that smells like "home" to cats. It's a synthesized cat hormone and it works well to sooth cats. I've also dabbed a little of my perfume on both cats. I put it on the back of their neck, so they can't wash it off easily. (Some vets don't like this approach because the cat might be allergic. It's what I wear all the time, so they are exposed to it daily anyway.)

It is true that most of the time the smell will wear off naturally and things will go back to normal between your cats. We had two cats that never got over it, though, so if peace is a priority, it's best to do something about it. (The girls hate each other to this day. I guess even cats can say things that they can't take back. LOL)

Your cat probably came home with a strange smell on it.
How about giving them both a bath.

OR

Your cat has been "body snatched" It seems like the same cat that you took to the vet, but cat 2 can tell it has been altered personality wise. Your veterian is an alien.

Try giving him a bath with just water, and hopefully the smell will go away, and they may start to get along again. Sorry that's all I can think of, but good luck!

There is really not a whole lot to do .. this happens a lot. You can try applying a small amount of vicks on each of their noses .. this might affect their appetite a little .. and after a day or two they will both have their own scents. We used to use that trick on our bunnys to trick moms into accepting orphan bunnys.

I have the same prob with my cats every time one of the go to the vet, they told me to take a (dry) wash cloth and rubb it on the cat that didn't go to the vet, and then take it and rubb it on the cat that did go to the vet ...puts the scent of the one who didn't go to the vet on the kitty that went to the vet, so now he smells normal! Peaceful resoultion

its becouse of the injury in the animal world their first instincts are to get rid of the weaker one in the pack.but the new scents could throw him off to.not recognizing him as his kin.so bathe him and try to hide the wound in some way maybe keep them separated until he heels.
