Is New York City's Lower East Side safe?

I'm looking into a room share in the Lower East Side at Columbia and Delancey. I know most of the areas of Manhattan but I'm not familiar at all with the LES.
Is this a safe area and is there anything I need to be concerned about? Obviously the general rule of not walking by yourself at 2 am, etc. applies everywhere.

It's a pretty safe area with a lot of fun things to do. My daughter lived near Tomkins Square Park for a couple of years and never had any trouble. At the same time, like in any big city, you need to be prudent. I would say go for it. Every time we went to visit her, I did not want to come home, it was so much fun.
