My husband and I are planning to go visit a foreign country in May 2008 and stay there for 3 weeks. His U.S. passport will expire in August 2008. Is there any posibilities of having a problem that it's going to expire soon? Thank you!

We are going to Philippines. If he will renew it at anytime, how long will it take to wait? We've heard many news about backlogs in issuing U.S. passports today. Has it been solved?

It depends on which foreign country you wish to visit. As noted, passports must generally be valid for 6-months from the expected departure date from the country in question. However, there is a group of countries which, by established reciprocity, waive the 6-month rule. That said, your husband has plenty of time to apply for a new passport now, that will be good for ten years - why not take care of it now and avoid the worry?

It depends where you're going. Some countries require that your passport be valid 6 months AFTER you visit a country.

To play it safe it may not be a bad idea to renew the passport NOW.

If your passport is due to expire within the next 2 years a better option may be to renew it.

I say you have time to renew the passport and be safe than having problems then.

You shouldn't have a problem staying only three weeks in May, or even in to June. His passport is valid until August when you will be home, hopefully safe and sound. Upon returning, ne should apply for a renewal as it will take some time and it is easier and ceaper to renew than to get a new passport.

As long as it is not expired when you enter the foreign country you should be fine. It may be a good idea to file for a renewal, ASAP, as the waiting period for a passport can be a longish one.
