I gained 5 lbs this week. I've been doing cardio and weights. I haven't changed my eating pattern (but I wasn't gaining weight before working out). Is this normal? You know, doing weights and gaining weight?

That extra weight comes from that extra muscle you're building. =) No worries!

You will gain some weight from muscle but 5lbs in a week is kind of a lot. Could have a medical problem maybe an underactive thyroid? Schedule a check up with your doc. they can give you a physical and some good work out pointers and let you know what is normal and what is not. BTW way to go on getting healthy - you rock!

when a person goes from being sedentary to being active many changes take place in the body. the first thing that happens is that insulin sensitivity increases (IS) in the muscle cell. when IS increases nutrient uptake in the muscle cell is increased. this causes a greater amount of blood sugar to be stored in muscle tissue as glycogen. when glycogen is stored there is a corresponding increase in water stored at about a 1:3 to 1:4 ratio. basically for every molecule of glycogen stored there are 3-4 molecules of water stored. the water is needed to help metabolize the glycogen into the cellular energy source ATP.

this is where the extra weight is from and it's perfectly normal. this is what the body is supposed to do.

Yeah, normal. Muscle mass is heavy. So that is what you are gaining. It will slow down(the speed of gain, but right now it is rapid).
