My cat has gingivitis. Vet prescribed Clavamox. Cat vomits 30 mim. to 1 hr. after dosing him. Checked vomit and no sign of pill. Is this normal? Should I dose before he eats or aft? Help.

Vomiting is a side effect of Clavamox.
It can also be indication of allergic reaction or overdose. Clavamox, like, most medications are prescribed based on the current weight of the patient.

It may be that they simply need to adjust the dosage, but most likely, you will be given a different antibiotic. It is important that you call your vet immediately. DO NOT give him any more until you speak with the Dr.

And yes, Clavamox should be given with food - unless otherwise instructed by your vet. All instructions including full stomach/empty stomach recommendations should be on the label.

My cat has severe periodontal disease and had 4 teeth pulled last week, but luckily has not had any adverse reactions. I usually dose him and then put wet food in front of him right away so he doesn't have a chance to sneak off and gag it up. I think it's easier on his tummy when the medicine is absorbed by the food, that way the meds are slowly introduced into the system rather than a sudden dose on an empty stomach. Maybe that's why your cat gets sick. Try what I wrote and see if it helps. Good luck with your kitty!

Vomiting is one of the possible side effects of clavamox. I found it happened more often with the morning dose then the afternoon dose. I think giving it on a full stomach may help.

I would ring your vet about that. I have never had any trouble with clavamox and stomach upset. There may be another antibiotic that would sit better with your cat.

I would contact your vet. my kitten was on it for a short time and he never thew up we either always gave it to him on a full stomach or gave it to him then had him eat. He could be throwing up because he is allergic to it. I know people can throw up from a medicine if they are allergic please do me a favor and call your vet.
