Depending on the type of rice you want to cook. You can always go to the store and buy the minute rice where all you do is microwave. Then there's the ten minute rice where you boil it in water for ten minutes. You can buy a rice cooker and do it that way. To do rice in a rice cooker, for every cup of rice you need one and a half cup of liquid. Doesn't matter what type of liquid. Or you can try the hard way of cooking rice in a small sauce pan. Just put one cup of rice and one and a half cup of liquid and let it boil. But once it boils bring the cooking temperature down to medium to low and simmer all the way. You may want to stir it up once in awhile. This will make sure that the rice on top will get equal amount of liquid and rice on the bottom won't over cook.

If you want to make a rice dish from scratch here's an easy garlic rice recipe. If not buy minute rice or some of the others in the bags and boxes and follow the directions. Enjoy:

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion, chopped fine
3 garlic cloves, minced fine
1 cup long grain rice
2 cups chicken broth
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
1 bay leaf
1/4 cup parsley, chopped

Put the oil in a skillet and saute the onions& garlic until golden.
Add rice, broth, thyme& bay leaf Bring to a boil uncovered, turn heat to low cover and simmer about 25 minutes or until the liquid is absorbed, give a little stir after 15 minutes Remove bay leaf& stir in the parsley

The way my Indonesian-Dutch neighbor taught me to cook rice was first to wash it well. To do that, put your rice in your pot, add water and stir it and stir it, draining when the water gets cloudy until the water stays clear. Then you want to add enough water to the rice in the pot that if you touch the surface of the rice with your pointer finger, the water comes up to the knuckle closest to the tip of your finger. That is the correct amount of water no matter how much rice you have. Bring to a boil, turn the heat down to low, and watch it - turn it every so often, and keep cooking it until there is no more liquid in the pan. Then my neighbor moved the rice over to a steamer and steamed it for 15 minutes over boiling water. It was perfect every time.

Minute rice--Buy that kind of rice at the store. You follow the directions on the back of the box. I guarantee you can't screw it up.

Regular rice--the key is to use a pan quite a bit bigger than you think you need. Follow the directions on the back of the package, but make sure you don't have the heat too high or it'll scorch in the last couple of minutes. Test to see if it's done around 12 min and if it tastes good (not crunchy or too firm) take it off the heat otherwise give it another 2 mins, test, 2 mins, test. This is much harder to do, and to me, Minute rice is much easier.
