The fastest fighter jet is the MiG-25 (Foxbat-R) which is the reconnaissance version of the MiG-25 Fighter.

It was tracked in the Sea of Japan in 1976 at Mach 3.2 at 70,000ft (approximately 1,750 knots groundspeed, or 2010mph!)

As you can see it is a very old airplane, and first flew in 1964. Only the recon version is still in service with the Russian airforce; Algeria, Syria and Armenia still operate the fighter version.

It would be the Russian MiG-25 Foxbat, once tracked at Mach 3.2. The Guinness Book of World records lists the Foxbat as the worlds fastest combat aircraft.

Technically speaking, the Foxbat is an interceptor.

For eagle6014, there never was an F-15 that exceeded Mach 3!

The MIG 31. The Russians still operate them.

Its the fastest flying military jet in the world. Its not a fighter like the Typhoon is though. I would say the Mig 23 is the fastest fighter in the world. Its roughly the equivelant of the Tornado F3 but much faster.

Depends on how you look at it. Fastes airplane is the X-15.

Fastest fighter is the Mig 25 foxbat. Also the highest flying fighter. Mach 2.83 although there are claims that it is faster when tracked by radar.

Mach number it's self is dependant on altitude, temprature and density.

The Blackbird is the fastest though it is a recconnaissance aircraft, not a fighter. It was once reported that it crossed the Atlantic so fast that by the time it had completed its turn for a landing in the UK it had flown over the French coast!!

the MiG-25 has a top speed of mach 3.2 since it was designed to intercept the XB70. the F15 tops out at around mach 2.8 and the F14(no longer in service) topped out at mach 2.5. the F22 is likely going to have a top speed of around mach 2.8 also, but at this time it is classified for obvious reasons. these days however speed isn't as important as it once was. the emphasis these days is on stealth and maneuverability.

F-12. Even though the F-12 didn't enter production, it was the faster fighter jet ever built

The MIG 25 Foxbat, designed specifically to go after the SR71 Blackbird and the XB70 Valkyrie (which never made it to production)

I heard that maybe an F-15E Strike Eagle can do Mach 3 without external fuel tanks. I'm sure that's classified. As a former military man, the actually speeds of most aircraft are classified. I'm quite sure that just about all countries will say that about their military's aircraft.

The fastest fighter EVER was the F-12. Which later became the SR-71. The F-12 was to fast to be a competative fighter. The aircraft was its own worst enemy. In 1960, 2 F-12's were lost to there own weapons when they fired them at max speed. the aircraft overshot there own heat seekers, the missiles reacquired their targets(the F-12) and destroyed them. The aircraft was to replace the XF-108 Rapier. It was designed to exceed mach 3.35 at 90,000+ft and beable top launch its missiles. A new missile had to be designed, the AIM47.
