Well, I recently took my son fishing. He'll be four in December. The obvious benefit of course of his going fishing with dad is that dad has a drivers license, so he can fish somewhere other than the pool in the back yard. But besides that, we had a great time. Talked about all kinds of stuff we don't talk about in front of his sisters (5 and 8) and we even got to pee in the bushes! There's something mom doesn't let him do at home!

Just being with dad and doing a grown up kind of thing together is great for youngsters. That so called quality time we hear so much about is what you just described. Catching a fish is cool too if it happens. I can't imagine what my childhood would have been like if dad didn't take me fishing, teach me to ride a bicycle, play catch with us or just walk to the park and feed squirrels and pigeons. The benefit derived? I think it was when I had a son of my own and knew a bit about how a father should be.

it just is not about the fishing, it is the QUALITY TIME of bonding, passing on tradition, learning patients, to appreciate the outdoors, learning conservation. start early, go as often as possible, make it fun. you might not be able to wet a line, it is all about the child. this is for both mom AND dad, or whatever makes your family core. i learned a little too late on the last part. most of what you have read is a compolation of varios sportsmen and women on t.v. and real life. and you give the child a outlet so he OR she does not turn to a life of stupidity. this is for boys AND girls. they should be given equal experiences in life.

well i am 50 yrs old,and i was 5 when my dad bought my first rod and real,i remember the night he brought it home with him.after supper he said i got you something and its on the back porch.and when i found it i was the happiest kid in town.then he started taking me fishing with him.those fishing trips are something i will never forget.i still talk about them.and now that my dad is gone the thoughts are there even more.i would give my right arm just to relive one of those trips with my dad.see he was my best friend to.so to me the benefits are the memories.i will have them till i die.

Quality time with Dad.
Dad can be a numpty when it comes to fishing - doesn't matter - but time just sitting around, fiddling with tricky stuff and eventually getting bored and splashing in the water ... memories a boy will carry forever!
