religion did not 'run the world' during the 'Dark Ages'. Western Europe (which is not 'the world') was in chaos after the invasions of the Huns, Vandals, Goths, and others. The Catholic Church was the guardian of what learning there was in Western Europe. In Eastern Europe, or specifically Byzantium, the Orthodox Church worked closely with the Emperors to build a society of high learning and culture. The Empire was destroyed finally by Islam, but Islam itself (Islamic, Jewish, and Christian scholars) through the Middle Ages preserved the learning of the Greeks, etc (which it obtained from the Syrian Christians). After the fall of Byzantium great learning came to Western Europe, which was still united in the Catholic faith. This learning helped bring about the Renaissance, which was a Christian movement.
