After Jesus was resurrected.
They were Holy People of God.
(See scripture below).
Your right though, what a significant event, that is not mentioned too much. But remember, there was a whole lot of action going on at that time. The Son of God came to earth, He was trotured and crucified, Jesus resurrected! Just so much going on. I know that the dead being raised IS A BIG DEAL but in the scope of the bigger picture not even a drop in the bucket.
Matt 27:52-54
The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus' resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people.
54When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, "Surely he was the Son[a] of God!

Matthew 27: 52-53
Christ's death on the Cross was accompanied by at least four miraculous events:
1. Darkness
2. The tearing in two of the curtain in the Temple
3. An earthquake
4. Dead people rising from their tombs
Jesus' death could not have gone unnoticed. Everyone knew something significant had happened.
Ezekiel 37:12
"12 Therefore prophesy and say to them: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: O my people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel."
I believe these bodies represent the spiritually dead people sitting in our churches today.
Hope this answers your question.

Remember that Jesus raised the dead before and still people didn't believe. I think that those who died would probably be those who had recently died. Still, something happened in Jerusalem because suddenly Christianity became a force to be reckoned with, not through might, nor through the sword, but through the disciples proclaiming the word. If anyone wanted to crush christianity before it started, all they had to do was produce the body of Jesus, which was guarded by Roman soldiers who would have been executed for failure to keep thieves out of the tomb.

I believe these were the Old Testament saints. At the time previous, I believe they were in Paradise, where Abraham, Lazarus (the poor man) was and others. Jesus descended to lower parts, and took captivity captive, got the keys of death and hell, and made a show of the principalities. Since Jesus said no one comes to the Father accept through Him, then He went there so the "saints" could worship Him. Then they went to Heaven. Also the veil in the temple that separated the holy place with the Holy of Holies was torn, meaning we all now can come directly to the Father with our petitions.

HE... cried... with a loud voice, as a shout of triumph, and YIELDED UP His Spirit. In other words, having borne the wrath of God's judgment against sin, He knew He had triumphed over Satan and the curse of sin. Right after he died, before his burial is when this took place, but I don't know who the dead people are. Good question

I don't have my Bible handy, but I think the dead rose at the moment of Christ's death. I believe they were the prophets and the righteous people from the Old Testament, but I'm not sure.

Hard to say, but its curious that no one else mentioned it, not even the other Gospels.
One would think that a large number of dead people walking around would be cause for mention in a lot of places.
The simple explanation is that it never happened.
