If I don't want to go somewhere, even if it is just lunch a 10 minute drive away, I simply say, "I cannot manage that". You don't owe them any explanations.
No one really wants to hear an excuse anyway, because they all sound like just that, excuses.
If you say you can't afford the trip, it will sound like you are hoping they will offer to pay to get you there.

Dont give an excuse, tell the truth. You tell your cousin how it is. You send a nice gift voucher or cheque with a personal note wishing the happy couple all the best but let them know that there will be enough family there anyway. At least the cheque/gift should be of a reasonable size to excuse your absence.
After all, you are saving a 3000 mile plane ride cost.

1. Don't have the money
2. Can't get the time off work
3. Scheduling conflict
4. Travel time too great
5. Other obligations, children, parents etc.
Unless this is your first cousin's daughter and you are that close you probably were invited just because you are family anyhow. It's not going to be a major thing if you aren't there especially when you live so far away.

Why do you need an excuse? Just tell her you're unable to make it. Flying across the country includes a lot of time and money that many people getting married realize others can't afford. Just RSVP with a no answer.

Tell them you do not have enough cash to make it and send them a gift via UPS or FedEx..
That's the only excuse I would use because it would be true. I love family but not so much that I'm traveling across a country to see someone get married for one day only to go without speaking to that person again for years. Blahhh

Thats super far, my guess is that you got a courtesy invite, and they are not expecting you to really come especially since its distant family (meaning a 2nd cousin, not your immidiate family)
Also, you owe no excuses about why you arent going and if someone asks for one its very rude.
Just send back your rsvp card marked with a check in the decline box and write a little note on it saying that you thank them for the invitation and are sorry that you wont be able to attend and that you will be thinking of them. Then wish them the best of luck and sign your name.

Just send your regrets, no need for excuses. I would only say why I could not if I were emotionally close to him/her...
1. Finances are tight
2. Too far away
3. No kids, and they don't want to get a babysitter
4. My job won't let me off.
5. Taking care of a dying relative.

I can't afford it.
Another obligation
Actually, I don't like excuses. I don't feel like you need to explain yourself to anyone. I wouldn't say I just don't want to go. I just send in my regrets RSVP, then send them a nice card with a check in it for $50. Knowing you're across the country, they don't actually expect you to attend like you lived across town or something.
Every person planning a wedding knows a certain percentage will decline automatically.

Cannot leave work.
Cannot leave school.
Don't have the finances.
Look, she will probably have lots and lots of RSVP response cards and will not ask you for a reason or excuse. Fill out the response card. Just decline. Since she is family, send a gift. That's all that is necessary.
