Fanatical means possessed with or motivated by excessive, irrational zeal.

I would not "be surprised to hear that most Catholics have a fanatical devotion to the pope" on this forum because a few people like to tell all kinds of lies here.

But if we speak the truth, then I know that almost all Catholics have a purely rational devotion to our most senior pastor, the direct successor of Simon Peter.

With love in Christ.

I no longer practice, however, I don't believe this pope has anywhere near the devotion that John Paul II did. Did I love John Paul as a practicing Catholic, yes. I was no longer practicing when he died but it was still enormous for me. I admired him and his efforts to try to heal old religious wounds and bring other religions together during his last years. I don't believe my parents and sisters (who still practice) have a 'fanatical devotion' to the current pope. If you think about it objectively, the person who makes the rules is the person you're going to look to for guidance in your spiritual practice particularly as a Catholic. Lots of theological reasons but too much to get into. I haven't met many Catholics who bash other religions and if people think they do, then they are talking about old dogma that no longer exists. Am I defending Catholics, yes. Do I want to practice again? No.

Being Catholic I would say YES. Very surprised to hear that. I've got relatives who are religious (Nuns, brothers etc.) and have never known them to be overly devoted to the Pope. Hold him in high regard and respect but fanatical devotion...please.

The pope is considered infallible, which is absurd. As a Christian, no one is perfect, not even if they are speaking God's word. I am sorry, but I was raised Catholic and the pope is just the leader of the Catholic Church, not a divine person sent from God. I hate the fact that the Catholic Church hangs on whatever he says and believes it all. The Catholic Church is an elitist community, and they believe only their religion is the right one and they are intolerant of all other's beliefs.

Yes, as a practicing Catholic, I would be VERY surprised to know that most of us have a "fanatical devotion" to him.

Yes! They believe that they have fanatical devotion to the Pope, because they are in their religion and you don't surprise. Of Catholic believers.
Because if you do not believe then you are fired.

I'd be suprised to hear that "most" of them do, but not suprised at all if a few are.

I think them a sort of strange lot anyway; my mother-in-law lights a candle every night and prays to the spirit of Frank Sinatra to help her win the lottery.

And not even she is that devoted to the Pope lol

Yes, especially since I am a Catholic.

We honor and respect the Pope as Christ's vicar on earth.

Don't make it sound like we worship the guy.

Yes, I would, because that is a lie.
Can you name a few?
The pope is the successor of St Peter. Catholics give him the same respect they would give to Peter if we could meet him.
I believe your question is ignorant and based on anti-Catholic bigotry.

To Save Religion: Papal Infallibility is NOT absurd. If you believe the Bible is infallible, then you believe the men who wrote it were too. God can hold anyone he wants to be infallible. Who are you to tell God who he can choose? Read this:
