Belief and faith are both to be convinced that something is true. Faith is not just a mental acknowledgment, but trust also.

True Biblical faith is based on evidence.

Notice Romans 10:17; "So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." Here we see that faith comes from hearing the word. Knowledge is involved.

Also look at Acts 2. In verse 36 there was something they were to believe. In fact they were told to "know assuredly"! This is being completely convinced that this is true.

Before they were told this, however, they were shown evidence! Note in this chapter, it talks about fulfilled prophecy, the miracles were pointed out and displayed, and these people were told of witnesses who saw the risen Christ! Based on this EVIDENCE, they were to "know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.” (verse 36)

Biblical faith is based on evidence, not something believed in spite of the lack of evidence.

"But Saul increased all the more in strength, and confounded the Jews who dwelt in Damascus, proving that this Jesus is the Christ." (Acts 9:22)

Jesus said, "Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves." (John 14:11) Even He pointed to the works (miracles) he did as evidence or a reason to believe!

True Biblical faith is having God's word for something and trusting God enough to do what He says to do, in the way he said to do it!

Faith comes by hearing the word of God, so if you believe something that is not from scripture, it is not from faith!

I agree with meitay,

When a person believes in something they are acknowledging that something. Example 1: by believing in God you are acknowledging his presence. Example 2: If you believe in yourself you are acknowledging yourself as a person and it gives you confidence.

When a person has faith in something they are trusting in that something. Example 1: You have prayed to God for something and by having faith you are trusting him to answer it. Example 2: If you have faith in yourself, you are trusting yourself and it gives you even more confidence.

Belief and Faith go hand in hand, but one must have belief before they can have faith. It's like playing a video game, your character has a certain ability that is rather weak, but as s/he continues to level up s/he is able to upgrade to a stronger version of that ability. Believing is a weaker version of Faith by practicing our beliefs and acknowledging the things we need to acknowledge we can eventually upgrade to Faith and if we practice our faith and trust in the things we need to trust in, we can eventually upgrade to enlightenment, and that is knowing something.

So you have acknowledging (believing in) something, trusting (having faith in) something and knowing (being enlightened in) something. Whether it be God, the Universe, spirits, etc.

Faith is trust you put into the universe for things to happen in a way that is helpful and best for you. (not necessarily what you want but what is best for you in the "big picture" of your life.)

Belief are the ideas you have put together for yourself that explain the universe to you.... the meaning you give to things.

Faith is having confidence in that which cannot be proved or disproved.
Belief, religion-wise, is having faith.
