If spitting is too gross you can always check that the light has gone out showing it's up to temperature.

I suppose spitting is the best method but splashing with cold water would be much nicer, especially if kids are around.

if it's plugged in and switched on chances are it's hot, or try to iron something then hold your hand just above the garment to detect heat.

NEVER spit or slash water on it. The base is of cast iron. It could crack with serious repercussions.

you could say spitting is a form of contact.....
if heat is being generated you should see covention air currents similar to a mirage effect in the desert.

iron it on the board or a surface it like a tea towel and then touch the surface or tea towel to see if it's warm!
or flick water on it and see if it hisses!
