If you wrote an eyewitness account of some spectacular incident that occured, people may not believe you. Now if 40 people all wrote about that same spectacular incident, other people would take notice.
Now, if you wrote a book full of predictions (Old Testament) and all those predictions came true (New Testament), then people would REALLY take notice.

Fact: The Bible is the best selling book of all time and has more historical attestation than any other book or document in existance. I will be happy to post further info, just ask, not that I think you care. I'll check back in a few minutes.
Fact: You're probably not going to get 30 answers, so go write your book and live in your fairy tale world.
Edit: Didn't think you were serious. You are what you have spoken. 8:11 AM CST 9/22/07 If you get 20 answers, I'll post the origin of the Holy Bible.

Which testament are you speaking of - the Old Testament or the New Testament? Do you even KNOW what you're talking about?
True, the Old Testament has a lot of tall tales that are hard to believe, but it was the cornerstone of people's beliefs 2,000+ years ago. The New Testament, however, was a collection of writings from Christ's disciples after He died. Think of them as His PR agency (that's "public relations," incase you didn't know). They wanted to ensure that people centuries later would know His story and read it.
You do have a point, however. The Bible is manmade, and in many cases, certain books of the Bible were banned because they didn't fit the church's ideal. Christ has several female followers as well who wanted to contribute, only to get their compositions buried in the desert.
The point is there's so much we don't know, and it goes far beyond the Bible. But if writing fairy tales will make you feel better, go for it.

As I read today's fiction, I find that we have very vivid imaginations. However the most believable fictions are the ones that mix factual events with fictional outcomes.
In the case of the bible a group of men in a sect near Capernium mixed recorded events in history and added there fiction to it. then the catholic church did it's part. (the catholic church started by Constantine not PAUL) for control.
So the answer to your question is you need to base your fairy tale book in some recorded history get some help and I promise you that you will have some sort of a following.
not much different.

Well if your book attempts to help people come to functional conclusions using history of events to help them survive for hundreds of years following those tennants, then it would be the same. Some of the Bible works, some doesn't. It is up to us to discern the messages in it for our time. This is a part of John 14 12, even commanded by the leader of that book that the Christians worship at times.
Healing be unto you and yours and me and mine

It's not any different. Read the Book of Mormon sometime. You will laugh your @ss off. It amazes me that anyone can believe in an organized religion. People are so gulllible.
"Your imaginary friend, God, loves you. He put you here because he wants you to worship him. He told a very bad man to torture you forever if you refuse to glorify his name. Oh...and don't eat pork."
How utterly ridiculous.

For starters, the new testament was written 200-300AD. So a more accurate analogy is if you wrote about George Washington, but witout being able to read about him. You can only write down what you have heard.

L. Ron Hubbard and Joseph Smith are two modern (well, relatively modern) day individuals who did just that.

Joseph Smith did, why not you? Are you charismatic enough to get people to believe you? David Koresh tried it.
