There are different grades of ceramic, the better ones are more expensive but worth it, be careful not to put anything with solvents in there, ie paint brush cleaners or whit spirit, if left in they will damage it.

Stainless Steel Butler Sink

I like ceramic. When I see stainless steel I think of cafeterias and restaurants.

When you buy ceramic check that the sink is not distorted. They sometimes are in the firing. Ceramic sinks are heavier that SS so the unit needs to be more robust.

A full-on ceramic sink is expensive. Most "ceramic" sinks these days are resin with a "ceramic" coating. They come in retro styles like "butler" sinks.
You can get reclaimed sinks from architectural slavage. I have 2 in my barn (but I'm in France!)

I have had both and now have a stainless again. I liked my ceramic but it scratched easily and stood out prominently. My new stainless is an undermount so it's barely noticeable and doesn't seem to be a problem with cleaning. The new stainless steel cleaners work great too.

It's a matter of personal preference. Both are easy to clean and last for a long time. Stains are easily removed with a bleaching cleanser. If you plan to sell your house, you may want to go with a stainless steel sink to match the stainless steel appliances many people prefer these days.

I have a white ceramic sink and I love it. They don't scratch as easily as people think. My sink is 15 years old and looks great. Of course there are a few small scratches, but that just adds to the character. When the time comes to replace it, if ever, I will get the very same sink.

I have had stainless steel, plastic, and am now the proud owner of a gorgeous old belfast sink.. I love it, SOOO much better than the others (in my opinion) In fact I got a whole 'new' kitchen (we bought a 1860s house but the kitchen was a yuk 1970s)..I now have a gorgeous solid oak kitchen with granite worktops and a solid oak work tops.. all for £500 .. 2nd hand from ebay.. (took weeks of scouring the site, but little gems come up occasionally).. good luck.. x

I would defintely recommend ceramic, so much easier to keep clean, no problems with limescale, watermarks etc. The one thing I would say is that you do have to be careful, hubby put a chip in the sink edge after just 3 days throwing a knife into the sink.
