Why do you assume that people ignoring an argument or answer derived from faith are not merely questioning the logic and reasoning behind the argument instead of questioning your faith.
If I said something like "I don't know what to do, my brother has a second failing kindey, HELP". Do you think it would be appropriate to say "I hope your brother is ok, I had a similar experience. I would seek comfort in God, I pray for you. If you pray everything will be ok"?
Of course it wouldn't. You'd better say something like 'are you capable of being a donor and have you considered it. I realize it's a tough choice and may not work, but it is something to think about'. Then you can add 'my thoughts and prayers are with you'.
If I saw that second answer I would think you were a wonderful, kind, and thoughtful person and I might even think 'Hey, prayers are cool. They might work. At the least they are a comforting ritual and for somebody I don't know to do something for me out of the goodness of their heart means a lot'.
Man gets lots of things wrong. Many religions are founded on us doing things wrong. If God exists then there's nothing to say we did not interpret his words correctly and his contribution to humanity happens to coincide with evolution or be a completely different thing (he pushed the big bang button, etc).
The second I see something like 'intelligent design' used to supplant evolution it makes me sick.
So you ask why people don't want others to believe in a higher being? Besides the fact that some may believe that your views are lies that corrupt, it's often because the views expressed by a minority are very fundamentalist and don't stand up to a minimum of critical thinking.
I'm on your side by the way. I think people should be able to believe in what they want and I like the way you said 'there is *something* that is keeping me alive...'

You say that like having faith is a good thing...
To many it is, and to many it corresponds to a vital truth.
But except at the level of personal conviction the issue isn't settled, not least because amongst those who do have faith there is enough difference as to WHAT people should have faith in to cause everything from family splits to wars.
Given that, testing and questioning faiths and beliefs is perfectly legitimate in the search for truth. My convictions may need replacing with a better set, or yours may. Putting them out in the markeplace for comparison is one way of finding out.
The "it works for me, true or not" argument has some mileage but it isn't a perfect defence by any means.
Is relying on a happy delusion generally considered a healthy state, apart from this one area?
I'll take my (approximations to) reality a little firmer than that.
I'm in agreement with many Christians on this, at least: we're dealing with issues of what's true, not what makes me feel comfortable.

Well, my mother would say "it's the devil." When I was a snobby teenager, I would've gotten so embarrassed by that statement. But the older and wiser I get, the easier it is to see her point.
The difference between my mother and "these people" is that right now, she's running a soup kitchen downtown feeding homeless people, while they're just sitting at their computers trying to insult people's beliefs. True, I'm sitting here as well, but I never said I was as good of a person as my mom is.
Honey, don't let them get to you. If believing in God feeds your soul, then you're all set. Don't feel like you need to defend your faith, because your relationship with God is a personal one between you and Him, and no one can destroy that if it's strong enough.
Good point though. Thanks for bringing it up.

As long as u know there is a God, you believe in Him and have faith in Him....dont let what others say bout Him get to you or make you question what you believe or love doing. Do what you believe in and believe in what you do :-) God bless u :-)

They dont have a spiritual belief, they have an absence of one.
It isnt enough to state what they believe and move on. They feel compelled to not only avoid faith but in fact to destroy others' based on their hatred of God and us. In short, they dont care about your well-being.

its ok if it helps you but can i just point out, there doesnt have to be a "higher being" to keep you alive, what keeps you alive is your body and this earth.
We all have different opinions and we're never gonna see eye to eye, we just dont like how religious people frown upon us just cos we chose not to believe. and we hate it when they try to argue with us that we're wrong and they're right.
