Because it is through the Church that all other sacraments are delivered/recieved by the faithful.
We have to remember that the Church IS "the Body of Christ" on earth. It is through the Church that Christ acts for the salvation of all who would believe. Without the Church there would be no sharing the Gospel, with out the Church there would be no Baptisms, no Communion, no discipleship, no maturation in our faith, etc. Also the Church is the physical vehicle of the Holy Spirit on earth today.
Now here's the "kicker". We must aslo remember that "the Church" referes to all baptised and faithful Christians not any particular "institution" of man. Jesus Said "where two or more are gathered IN MY NAME there I am also in their midst." God gifts every believer with something to add to the Body and from that Body every believer can find solace and edification in theor faith. Those professed Christians that believe thay do not "have to be part of a Church" are both denying the people of Cod those talents which God has gifted them AND are strangling their own faith by refusing to be nurished in the faith and will eventually "die" spiritually like a cell of the human body seperated from its host dies.
I Hope this helps you out in your assignment. :-)

I am speculating here. A sacrament is an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace.. The Church was instituted by Christ and is certainly an outward sign. How is it fundamental? It seems to me that it is the primary source of His truth and life for all mankind, all creation, the angels, saints.. Since He is the head of the church, this means that all our sources of love and faith come through the church and therefore though Him.

The purpose of a sacrament (of which there are seven) is to give grace.

The church was established by Jesus Christ to be the universal distributor of his grace, to the world.

776 As sacrament, the Church is Christ's instrument. "She is taken up by him also as the instrument for the salvation of all," "the universal sacrament of salvation," by which Christ is "at once manifesting and actualizing the mystery of God's love for men." The Church "is the visible plan of God's love for humanity," because God desires "that the whole human race may become one People of God, form one Body of Christ, and be built up into one temple of the Holy Spirit."

See how simple that is?
