Vegan in a dietary sense means absolutely no animal products: no eggs, no dairy, and also no animal by-products found in sooooooooooooooooo many foods and products. Vitamins, for example, are often made with gelatin. Whey is milk protein, found in a vast majority of processed foods. One must carefully read ingredients and have fairly extensive knowledge of food and ingredient names to be able to spy the animal derivatives. There are two main reasons for going vegan: other beings (desire to avoid participation in the maltreatment of animals or a belief that animals should not be used for human ends), and self (people who avoid animal products will attest to a cleaner, healthier, purer feeling and sense of well-being).
The term vegan also may refer to an entire lifestyle, wherein the diet is vegan, but also all other products used in life. That means no leather shoes or furniture or upholstry, handbags or belts. Cosmetic and personal care products must be free of animal products AND not tested on animals. To the best of a Vegan's ability, anything purchased or consumed should not have hurt, endangered, killed, or otherwise negatively impacted the life of animal.
Hope this helps -- the book "Skinny *****" is a great starting point for those wishing to learn more - the have an extensive list of animal product names, as well as Peter Singer's books, especially "The Way We Eat", and the website for PETA has plenty of information, and even a free vegetarian starting kit.

A pure vegetarian eats no meat, dairy, eggs, or other animal ingredients, including honey.
A vegan takes it beyond diet to lifestyle. Vegans avoid anything that results from the exploitation of animals. A vegan will not go to animal circuses, and will not go to zoos. A vegan does not use silk, wool, leather, or fur; does not use cosmetics with beeswax or lanolin in it; does not use products that have been tested on animals.

Vegans take it to the next level. They do not have eggs (some vegetarians do not have eggs either) they do not eat any dairy product, or any animal by product. They usually make sure that all of their consmetics, clothes, ect are animal free, this includes wool. You would be suprised what the main ingredients for lipstick and other cosmetics is.

Vegans refrain from all animal by-products.
The term "animal by-product" in a vegan context refers to material derived from animals for human use. Notable animal products include meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, dairy products, honey, fur, leather, wool, and silk. Common animal by-products include gelatin, lanolin, rennet, whey, beeswax and shellac.
Veganism (also strict or pure vegetarianism) is a philosophy and lifestyle that seeks to exclude the use of animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose. Vegans do not use or consume animal products of any kind. The most popular reasons for becoming a vegan are concerns for animal rights, the environment, or human health, and spiritual or religious concerns. Of particular concern are the practices involved in factory farming and animal testing, and the intensive use of land and other resources required for animal farming.

Vegan means that you can't eat, wear or use ANYTHING from animals. They don't eat eggs, milk, butter and alot of other things. They also refuse to wear leather, wool and fur. Also, they don't use any products from animals. Thier diet is very limited but gives justice to animals. I am a vegetarian and it takes alot of will power. I can't imagine how much it must take to be vegan. Good luck with your diet and I hope that I helped!
