Or, do they have to land in the water and be towed out?

Thanks, all. I've never seen one in action on a runway, that's why I asked.

From photos of the planes, it just seems to me that the wheels wouldn't be big enough to handle a runway landing. And, the angle would have to be perfect in order to not scrape the floats.

But, apparently, these landings happen.

Because you all said the same thing, I'm putting to vote.

Isn't the whole point of Amphibians to be able to land on a runway as well as water?

Amphibian plane can land on a runway or water.
A few seaplanes were built with retractable beaching gear (looks some what like landing gear) but it could not be used to land on a runway with.

Amphibians, as the name signfies can operate both from water and land. Most have retractable wheels inside their floats. In my time the Albatross could be seen operating comfortably from both water and air.

Yes they can land on land or water. They have wheels that come out from the bottom of the floats if they are going to land on land. If they land on water, they just use the floats.

That what amphibian means both land and water. they can take off from water or runways. if they land on water they can use the engine to move them self on to land. the old seaplane
base on Watson Island in Miami Florida was not long enough for land take off. they loaded or unload on land and taxi out to the cut to take off or land. What a pretty site.
