According to Professor of Anthropology at Harward and University of Pennsylvania Carlton Steven Coon he believes that Montenegrins are Albanians that were Slavized and he basis his theory on the similarities in the genetic makeup of the two and cultural similarities. Also when Albanian warrior prince Scanderbeg formed the "League of Albanian Princes" he included a Stephan Cernojevic of Zabiak, Montenegro perhaps because of this fact.

I just asked an honest question. I was looking for people that may have facts and not here laying claim to Montenegro in the name of Albanians.

Vivet you asked about why behind everything that has to be an Albanian or something to that effect. Could it be that we are the oldest race in the Balkans and Greeks, Slavs, and ever1 else came latter and yet we are denied our history by your scholars and the facts are presented as "invented" in your own words.

I have many books on the Balkans. In one of them called "Slouch Hat" by Malcomb Burr he speaks of stories told by Montenegrins of kidnapping of Albanian women to show bravery and because they considered them close, and Montenegro always saw Scutari as their Capitol and everyone knows Scutari is as Albanian as it can get.

Goxy- I'm not sure the Albanians you have seen reflect the entire race statistics. The northern Albanians called Ghegs are a tall group of people, Carlton Stevens Coons (I hate to just state his material but he is the only anthropologists that did extensive research on the genetic make up of the Albanians) in his scholarly study called "The Mountain of Giants -A racial and cultural study of the North Albanian Mountain Ghegs" he points out that they are a tall group of people with genetic differences from southern Albanians called Tosks and Slavic neighboring people with great similarities to the Montenegrins. In this study he details all the tribes, and this is actual facts because photo's do exist of him measuring facial features, and also his translator/guide Stavre Fasheri wrote a book of his own detailing the expedition called "Through Mirdite in the Winter". I know there has been a lot of intermarriage among the people of the Balkans but one cannot help but wonder.

if we look customs of Albanians and Montenegrins , we'll find them very similar . there are lot of examples of those similarities , and it's impossible not to think of close origin of those two ethnic groups . since serbian tradition is much different from Montenegrin and Albanian tradition , and since serbians and Montenegrins are Slavs , for my opinion (doesn't have to be goxy's opinion too ), Montenegrins are slavized Albanians , that during history lost their mother tongue but not Albanian tradition .
the tribe Kuqi , which is half Albanian and half Montenegrian , is biggest fact for this theory . even so , everyone is free to choose and declare his nationality , so i am not pretending to change nationality of Montenegrins .

@ you stared this question most dearest yahoo user , and i knew you will answer it , as i was sure that we'll see things differently in this matter too .i will just add that Albanians are pure beauty comparing with serbians.

@@ vivet , Chinese, ****** , gypsies and serbians have nothing in common with Albanians , and those nationalities i mention have a lot in common , especially serbijanci and gypsies ( check :Leskovac , Vranje , Niš , čačak , half of Belgrade ) , only in Vojvodina you can still find pure serbijance and that is the reason they don't want to live with you .

We Montenegriens are closer to Albanian. For example our last names are similar to Albanians if you take the Slavic VIĆ off. For example Lekić-Lekë, Djokić-Djokaj, Lekovic-Leka, Pjetrovic-Pjetri and more. Albanian wedding traditions are very similar to ours.

Sure they are, and I'm the Queen of Sheba:)
Genetic makeup similar? For Albanians and Montenegrins? When did you last see a Montenegrin? They're NOTHING like Albanians, sorry to burst your bubble.... Tall, handsome men that they are don't have much in common with the rather short and unattractive Albanians last time I checked. That is the reality my friend. I know it would look good on your genetic tree, but no such luck. You must try somebody else.
Montenegrins are Serbs and unless you're telling us that Serbs are Slavicized Albanians, you should clean up your act and start it all over.

@mika: I see you're now concerned with my opinion even when I'm not present. A rare case of obsession you have there, mika.

Don't listen to Steven..He's rude apparently... You really love this guy, right? Well, first of all, how old are you guys? If you're still in high school, like I am, then I think it's best to wait after high school. And does it matter if your family accepts his or not? All that matters is that you TRULY love this guy and that if you really want to spend the rest of your life with him after you are married. Good luck. (: I pray for your family to accept his, and the other way around, of course. xx

CaptainAlbania,

In the 13th century a noble family named Balšić ruled over only a small part of today's Montenegro, and they are believed to be Vlachs, so some part of Montenegrins may partly be of Vlach origin, but the wast majority of Montenegrins are surely ethnic Serbs. I don't think it's even a question amongst today's Montenegrins. They're Serbs by ethnicity, but by the census of 2011 44.98% of them express their Montenegrin nationality, while 28.73% express themselves as Serbs. Only 4.91% of the Montenegrin people see themselves as Albanians by nationality, but from what I know, these Albanians have mostly Immigrated from Albania during the communist rule of Josip Broz Tito.

What I don't understand is, what are even believed to be Albanians? Albanian ethnicity doesn't really exist, and the Albanians have never existed as a homogeneous group of people, majority of them are truthfully Albanians by nationality like Americans. You've already made a statement where you've said that there are two big tribes of Albanians that are physically very different, and these are not the only tribe groups in Albania. In the region there's been many different Roman tribes, some of them were Thracians, Dacians, Illyrians, Vlachs, etc. And you can't deny Greek and Slavic (Serbian and Macedonian) genetical influence. In fact, the reason the southern Albanians are supposed to be smaller by size may be because they're closely related to the Greeks, whereas the northern ones are majorly influenced by Slavs.

And for the comments of mika is back,

First of all, the whole culture of Balkan Peninsula has been influenced by the Hellenic (Greek culture), and by the Oriental (Turkish) culture. Muslim peoples are majorly influenced by the Turks, whereas the Orthodox Christians are influenced by Greeks. Albanian folklore (folk dance) is majorly influenced by the Greeks, for example. So Montenegrins, Albanians, Serbs, and any other peoples in Balcan, are manly influenced by the Greeks, and some by the Turks.

What does this even has to mean: "since serbians and Montenegrins are Slavs , for my opinion, Montenegrins are slavized Albanians"?! Your statement is contradictory, my friend!

I know that Albania is one of the most, if not the most intolerant and racist countries in the world, but you should try to control yourself in public when it comes to the Roma peoples! Btw. many Roma peoples of Muslim religiosity in Kosovo and Metochia declare themselves as Albanian. Another issue I can't stand, is the Albanization of Serbian and Montenegrin people in the northern parts of Albania, where the Serbs and Montenegrins traditionally made a majority. One of these regions was a medieval Serbian stronghold Skadar, or today's city of Skadar (Albanians renamed it into Shkodra, btw. Skadar is a Slavic word, and it still has a meaning in Polish and Czech language). The Albanian ruler "Zog I of Albania" forbid to all minorities the usage of their names and surnames, they had to adapt and take Albanian ones, they didn't had the right to learn their native language, and many of them didn't have the rights to practice their religious believes, he took every form of their identity to force assimilation upon them.

And I think it's time for me to finish the story. The grand duke George Kastrioti Skanderbeg or in Serbian Đorđe Kastriotić Skanderbeg was of Serbian ancestry. His fathers name was Jovan/Gjon/Ionnais Kastriotić and his mothers name was Voisava. He has 8 brothers and sisters. His brothers names were Stanisha, Reposh and Kostandin, and his sisters were Mara, Jelena, Angjelina, Vlajka and Mamica. All of the names show his Slavic ancestry, because none of his family members were Albanian! His father was even buried in Hilandar, a Serbian Orthodox Church, in Eastern Greece. At the end, I'll post you a picture of the coat of arms of the Kastriotić or Kastriotich family and the coat of arms of noble Serbian Nemanjić family, that ruled over Serbia and Greece for about 300 years, see the similarities. And I'll also post a picture for you to see a difference between a Serbian, English and an Albanian. Mystery unsolved, there's no difference between English and the Serbs, but... ;-)

You delusional Albanian thieves!!!

Check every single fact I've mentioned, there's loads of information about it on the net.

Why people want to change history facts?
Why behind everything in Balkans have to be Albanian signature ?

Ok, we can discuss it as a theory, but I have also heard that Skenderbeg was actually a Serb. There are some theories about that too.
I doubt there are any genetic similarities between these two groups, but certainly there cultural ones - like living in tribes. Is that due to geographical facts (living in mountains, poor living standards), I don't know, but it's hard to claim that they are Albanians. Very problematic theory.
