Thats really ironic, I'm Irish and German and I love potatoes and beer too...
I doubt it has anything to do with genetics though; more than likely its just stems back to what kinds of foods a person has taken a liking to or what kinds of foods were most often served by the parents. Most of it is probably just the unconscious mind telling you what foods/beverages to gravitate towards.

It could just be cultural. Potatoes and beer are very popular in America. Potatoes aren't all that Irish anyway. They were brought to Ireland from the Americas, and in the 1800's the very poor residents of Ireland could not afford anything more than potatoes.

It is certainly possible that it is genetic. It is also possible that it's individual. Who knows? Personally, I think you should not worry about it. Unless you become addicted to potatoes and beer just enjoy them. Who cares why? Yeah, it could be genetic but might not be.
