Yeah 500 , 800 and even 1000 . They are VERY HIGH , but not unheard of . The problem is , the reading of total cholesterol gives little information . He should have had 3 separate readings , all 3 taken after at LEAST 10 hours fasting , and the result should reveal what KIND of cholesterol is too high , eg LDL , HDL or VLDL .

Yes 520 is awful, and perhaps this doctor isn;t taking this number seriously, Definitely you need a second opinion
I have heard of studies that suggest high cholesterol in older individuals is not as great a concern as with persons between 35 and 50 years of age Your husband is 59 so there be less cause for concern. Yes cholesterol should be 200 or less
Don't assume a doctor knows what he's doing because he went to school for 8 years
Theres an old saying.....doctors bury their mistakes

Okay...so, the 520 is the bad cholesterol, right?
My dad's, when diagnosed, was 545, and his triglycerides (another number you need to ask about) was 2,140...again, WAY off the charts.
The problem with medication is they can really do damage on the liver...and they can deplete the bodies' coQ10 stores...and without coQ10, you can stroke out.
But, my dad has been on medication for over 15 years from this...and so far, so good...and his cholesterol NOW is in the upper 200's (it's a genetic problem for him, not so much food)...so I DEFINITELY suggest confronting this doctor, and if she doesn't budge, GET A SECOND OPINION!
Dad was called, in his doctor's words, a walking time bomb...so you are SO RIGHT to be concerned.
BTW: Dad is now 62.

I have never heard of cholesterol ever being that high before. The only reason she may not have given lipitor or the other drug is if his liver enzyme is high. which in his case probably is. I would definately see another dr asap but while your online search for cholesterol risks.

520 is an extraordinarily high number. If you understood the doctor correctly, your husband would need to be placed on anti-cholesterol drugs immediately. Please have him see some other family doctor.

You're a moron for thinking your doctor is a moron, when he had to go to 8 years of medical school. Not really but, it's unhealthy to have it that high, but it's nothing to be alarmed about. All middle aged men have heart problems.
My orders: Have him drink a glass of wine everyday with his dinner.
