I'm 14, a diabetic, and don't have a cell phone. I also have celiac disease yet still go to my high school football games. I get dropped off. But I have to search for someone with a cell phone all the time to get a ride home. Also, I do walk home from school which is 1 1/2 miles and ride my bike to the baseball fields to play. Sometimes, I do forget glucose tabs and go low. I think a cell phone would be good so I could call my parents when this happens. In one year, this has happened near 20 times. They still won't get me one. My sister got one for her 16th birthday. I have 2 years to get mine and I will be a junior then because I have a July birthday. My sister is a sophomore but has a September birthday. Should i getone for emergencies and convenience.

You should get one. You can actually get a phone that doesn't have a plan. By law, every cell phone needs to be able to call 911 even if there is no plan. You could just ask for someone's old one. If you are worried about not being able to get in touch with your family, get a prepaid phone. You can use it for emergencies and such.
With anyone that has a disease that can change for the worse at any moment, it is always a good idea to have some type of phone.

Oh my goodness! Sorry, but I have to say this is not a good argument. Being diabetic has nothing to do with getting a cell phone - or not. I didn't have a cell phone until I was past 30, diagnosed with diabetes for over 10 years.
If you are really that concerned about your safety, make sure you are always around someone else. And the concern would be having someone who can use their cell phone or run quickly somewhere for you - to call 911, NOT to call your parents for glucose tabs.
Emergencies can be dealt with in other ways, and convenience too. Which is more convenient, having a new toy or having good health??
By the way...never once in 16 years have I had an emergency due to diabetes...not even for the 10 months I was pregnant and on insulin. That's because I keep my blood sugars under control - you can too - and if it's not possible due to being pregnant, sick, etc., just keep someone around at all times. You can do it!!
Good luck! (:

Yes you should. Being a diabetic you should have the privilige of a cell phone in case of an emergency. If your parents won;t budge ask for something called a track phone. It's a cell that you buy minutes for so you can never go over your limit and they can still control how much you use it.

I have to agree with Anita. I just got thrust into parenthood with a 14 year old step-son. I have taken that same approach with him but with other issues. He needs to show me that he is mature enough to handle the responsibibly before I will give it to him. It sounds like you mostly want a cell phone because all your friends have one. If you could stop forgetting to take your tabs with you (or at least make it less often), that is showing some responsibility.

Frankly I think your parents are right. You need to learn a greater responsibility for your illness and keep those glucose tabs with you, they are far more important to your well being than a phone. What if you call your parents for help and they are all the way across town and can't get there for thirty minutes or more, you could lapse into a coma and die, fat lot of good that cell phone did you in that case. No, young lady, you need to mature a good deal more and learn to keep those glucose tabs with you instead of trying to blackmail your parents with drops in blood sugar that are your own fault. Keep the glucose tabs with you.

sorry..but to me it sounds like you want a phone because everyother 13, 14, 15 year old has one. it sounds to me like you're trying to use diabetes to your advantage to get what you want. i think you need to be more responsible and not forget the glucose tabs.
how is it convenient for a 14 year old? good way to look cool perhaps?

When you are responsible enough to carry around all necessary supplies (i.e. glucose tablets), then you are responsible enough to have a cell phone. You'd still be up a creek with no paddle when you realized you forgot your glucose tablets AND your cell phone.

Let's put it this way. Up until about twenty years ago, we didn't have cell phones. We managed just fine without them. Get my drift?

Yes you should have one. It could be an emergency where you're not around someone else who does.

If you are responsible in other ways, then you should get one for emergency use.
