if you are thinking about changing careers, and seen a vacant slot in a company that you wanted to pursue, give them a call first to confirm the vacancy then ask them if its okay if you fax your resume.
but if you are asking to just fax your resume to every company that you think you can work, you shouldnt do it.
you could also consider looking for a job online, lets save our trees. :)

I don't know about being rude, but it doesn't seem very effective to me. I think mailing it would be better, with a cover letter addressed by name to the person in charge of hiring for that company. Faxing it is risky because you have no way of knowing who will receive that fax or what they'll do with it.
Also, I would want my resume presented well, printed on good paper, clear and easy to read, centred and straight. The quality of your fax will depend on the quality of the receiving fax machine, and that might not look very professional.

If you are sending resumes to companies that are not advertising an opening. absolutely do not fax it. Mail it with a cover letter. If you fax your resume without being asked, it will probably just end up in the trash.

It is not only rude, but annoying to receive unsollicited resumes by fax... keep in mind that a potential employer should not have to pay for paper for your resume... I never even consider a resume that is sent by fax unsollicited. It goes straight to the garbage can... even if you send it from home!

No, I don't think that it would be rude as long as you are not faxing it from your employer's fax machine. Also, as many posters before myself have mentioned, you could go one step further by hand delivering them. It offers a better presentation and may leave a better impression on the recruiter / HR representative.
You should also make sure you haven't signed anything with your current employer such as a "no compete clause", etc. That may hinder you from seeking employment with competing agencies.

If I get a faxed resume, and I am either not expecting it or haven't asked for it, it goes from the fax to the shredder. When we place ads, we say "apply in person". I figure if people can't read for comprehension, they're not qualified for the job.

To fax it from your current place of work? Probably, but it's also risky. Your current employer could probably find out. If your faxing from your own personal fax machine, then no. I guess I don't really understand the question.

YES YES YES
Totally wrong and sometimes illegal. If they didnt make an offer the fine is around $1,500 dollars. Check your laws, sending over an unsolited fax is illegal.
Plus it doesnt work.

I don't think it would be considered rude, but is that the 1st impression you want them to have of you? I wouldn't do a mass faxing, but try to customize it so that you'll get the response you want. good luck.
