After all, it's already cooked (like instant rice)

If I mix salt, seasonings, olive oil, water and couscous in a bowl and leave it in the refrigerator, will it ever soak through enough to be exactly identical to properly cooked product (that's cooled down)?

If so, how long should I soak it for and how much water to couscous?

Yes, you can do that. I make a couscous salad that way, by just pouring water over it and letting it stand. I add roasted peppers, asparagus, and snow peas to it, and make a balsamic vinaigrette dressing for it. Follow the package directions for it, I would assume 1 cup water to 1/2 cup couscous, but follow the directions on the package. It still only takes about 15 minutes for it to soak.

I doubt it will ever reach the right texture. All you have to do is boil the water first (2 parts water to 1 part couscous) then mix it with the other ingredients, let it cool (or the bowl may crack)and then put it in the fridge.

Absolutely - room temperature or cold water (same amount as hot water) can be used and olive oil, add some powdered sugar and crushed walnuts, a pinch of nutmeg and you have traditional couscous.
