You are the person who chooses what you will eat and what you will not eat. People choose vegetarian diets for many different reasons. It can depend on the reasons behind your choices. The biggest problem for vegetarians is getting the appropriate protein and vitamins. If you are taking care of that, you will be a lot healthier.

Just make sure you eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables in order to get your needed nutrients. Raw almonds, about 12 per serving, is an excellent source of protein, as is tofu / soy products. Green leafy vegetables are great protein sources too!

Congratulations on your decison! Okay, so avoid meat and anything with meat stocks and meat fat. Avoid gelatin, as that is made from the hooves, bones, tendons, and hides of animals. Make sure you buy rennetless cheeses (rennet is a coagulating agent made from the fourth stomachs of veal calves) or buy soy cheese.

Many Mexican restaurants make their beans with lard, many candies have gelatin, many processed foods have traces of animal bi products. It's just about learning to read labels.
Congrats and good luck!

Watch out for those easy-to-make store foods, such as Lipton sides or Ramen noodles... most of them contain ground up chicken as flavoring. Also, gelatin contains ground up bones. Congrats on your switch!

I am a lacto ovo vegetarian for animal rights...and I also never eat LARD or GELATIN. Other than that, watch for enzymes...some are animal.

Great decision! =D

Oh yes ... read every label of every food that you buy. Read up on what is vegetarian and if you aren't sure pester the hell out of restaurant wait staff, or family members preparing food for you to make sure THEY are conforming to YOUR dietary choices. Be focussed on YOUR diet and the hell with everyone around you. It's THEIR problem to make sure YOU are comfortable and have enough to eat.
