I'm reading Animal Farm by George Orwell and I realized, If you have a pet, you save it from the pound and cruelty. But if you don't, it doesn't get underfed and it has a full life to its whim. Which one is better for the animal?

If I ever bought a pet for myself, I have always, since I was 3, vowed to get it from the animal shelter. I will never buy a bred dog.

Do you have an acre of land where the dog/cat etc. can live a full happy life?

Confining an animal to an apartment and living the animal alone while going to school/work is cruel in my opinion.

Pounds save animals from cruelty and abandonment. They give them an aopotunity to find a caring and compassionate owner.

Do NOT buy a pet from a pet store. This is the ultimate cruelty to animales to get breed, caged and displayed. I oppose to breeding and selling animals for profit.

If you are considering having a pet, make sure that you have the proper accomodations and time adn resources to properly take care of it.

Good luck

If you buy an animal, you are encouraging a terrible system. Specially if you buy it from a pet shop. These animals come from farms where the mother is used for reproduction, again and again, with no break aloud. In the worst ones (not so rare) they are kept in cages alone, and their little ones are taken away from them too soon. If people didn't buy pets, these farms wouldn't exist.

If, however, you save an animal from a rescue center, then you are not taking part in the horrible system, not giving any bad people money, and you are saving an animal who has been abandoned and giving him a new home, a new life. Nothing wrong about that, quite the opposite in fact.

Go vegan!

If animals were just allowed to "have a full life to it's whim", they are not pets..they would be wild and feral. Most pets have been domesticated to live with man and the relationship between man and animal companion is very special.

Save a life and adopt.

I think it's great to have a pet if you are putting their needs first. For example, don't get a dog or cat if you're never home, or can't take care of it properly, or provide it's basic needs. And never get a "pet" that is a wild animal, not a domestic one. I know my dog had a very happy, fulfilled, and very much loved life.

Even before I was veg, I learned that it is best to adopt from a shelter. I have a cat who is now 16 years old and in pretty good shape for a senior cat. She has no interest in going outside; she barely looks out the window anymore. She provides me with companionship and someone to come home to at night, even if all she says is "meow." She gets a safe home and food security.

I feed her meat based foods because she's a CAT. A cat is a carnivore. I can be perfectly healthy without meat, but she cannot.

Yes! in such a case adopt a pet who can not take gud care of it self ... may be due to an injury or some other damage .. this way if he dies bcz of negligence there is no 1 to blame !!

I'm not sure what you mean by a full life to its whim. They get put down by the pound if no one wants them. But I oppose pedigree raising.

Totally depends on the animal you choose to make your pet.
