It all depends on the brand/type. Most french fries at fast food places aren't, as they don't have dedicated fryers. Restaurants can have dedicated fryers, just ask the waitress. Most plain chips are veggie, but some (like BBQ baked lays) have chicken fat and other animal byproducts in them. Read the label carefully!

It depends. If the french fries are cooked in animal fat, no, that is not vegetarian. Some potato chips also use animal ingredients.

Here's a list of some potato chips that contain animal products. The best plan would be to read the back before you buy them.

In general, yes. But french fries are sometimes cooked in animal fat, and potato chips might contain some ingredients like gelatin depending on the flavor. Read the label. I found some corn chips that contained chicken broth once.

Yes and maybe no. They are made of potatoes which is not meat. The definition of a vegitarian is someone who doesn't eat meat. If the chips are fried in fat or some other kind of meat. Then it would be considered non-vegitarian. You might want to eat chips that are made specifically fat-free. Its alot healthier to eat food without fat in it.
Now french fries are the same way. If they are fried in fat they could be donsidered non-vegitarian. I'm pretty sure I've seen fat free french fries at some stores!

potato chips are vegetarian depending on the flavorings they have on, you may be suprised to find out that flavors like roast chicken or ham are actually suitable as they o not use any animals in the making of these flavors.
french fries are also vegetarian depending on what type of fat they are cooked in, as they are often cooked in vegetable fat they are ok. mcdonalds french fries are vegetarian in england but not in america as they use the same fat for the burgers apparently, although i wouldnt advise eatin at mcdonalds as i went in there the other day and ther were flies everywhere including the cooking area

I am a vegetarian myself and i consume potato chips and french fries. i read the ingredients and allergies on everything that i eat and drink (fussy, i no) but, i have never come across any which contain meat products unless they have been cooked either alongside meat or in the oil, juices of meat products.

Some small dinners and hole-in-the-wall places still fry in lard or animal fat, but for the most part they are vegetarian. MCDONALD'S FRENCH FRIES ARE FLAVORED WITH BEEF!! The acutall oil they are cooked in is fine, but they acutally use beef extract to flavor them before frying. I don't know about their hash browns, but I wouldn't take that chance! Acutally, I wouldn't eat there at all just knowing how many adorable animals are used in their food.
