I mean, the food is already packaged and in the stores, so how would you be saving an animal by not eating it???

it says in the bible (the new testament) not to harass people for what they do and do not eat. You eat what u want and leave others to eat what they do or do not want to eat.

believe it or not, i do know what im missing, i used to eat meat and im glad to say i dont anymore, i wont go into all of the reasons but it has landed me with a great girlfreind and i feel like i have a much fitter body than i used to, so i think it was worth not torturing the odd animal.

anyway, yeah actually, you would be suprised how much difference one vegetarian can make, think about it, there are millions of veggies.vegans world wide and do you not think they made the meat industrie loose profit, each veggie contributes to that and im proud to say im part of that group, if you dont wonna be thats fine by me, just dont rub it in my face that your eating you way out of a healthy lifestyle, why should i care about you more than you care about the animals you eat?

anyway, im glad to see you have an open mind like all the other meat eaters around here, although at least there was a point to your question

You are not thinking your question through. It is not what is in the stores today but what affect we can have on the future.
Fewer animals consumed less needed or wanted for slaughter.

As for your 2nd statement..Nonsense. You only think you like meat..try it 100% PLAIN. It's the exciting sauces, flavorings, condiments you put on it that makes it "good". I can get those fun & interesting flavors with out the ill health that goes along with a flesh/meat based diet.

No I do not expect you to change, but this was a good question for a open debate. Thanks.

Slainté(to your health)

Number One: as more and more people become vegetarian (which is, of course, the goal) the demand for meat will decrease. Fewer animals will be raised for slaughter and I will know that I had something to do with that.

Number Two: I ate meat for nearly 17 years. I most certainly DO know what I'm missing and I don't miss it.

Guessing people's strategies/motives is always hard. What makes you think that ppl who limit their meat intake or avoid meat are doing it to help the animals? I work in a few vegan meals a week and it's to help me keep some semblence of a normal weight. I still eat some meat and at Thanksgiving, it's roast turkey and a side dish of lasagne made with Italian sausage. It reminds me of a waiter in a fancy restaurant when he was asked if the salmon was wild or farmed. He said farmed and went into a long explanation about how environmentally friendly the fish farm was. Actually, the customer didn't give a hoot about how environmentally friendly the salmon farm was; she was more concerned about the farm fish having higher levels of pollutants than wild caught fish. BTW, why are you so worried about ppl who don't eat meat? If you want to eat meat, go ahead. This is still America.

Actually, vegetarians save an average of 100 lives per year. One less person eating meat means less meat is needed.

Well its a fairly simple concept, if nobody buys whats on the shelves, the supermarket wont have any need to buy more stock for the shelf. Then if nobody buys stock from the company they will have to change thier product or they will go out of business.

Its basic economics, supply and demand.

Sure the animals are in the cans already and they cant be saved, its the future animals that will be killed for future stock that people are trying to save.

Honestly though, i could care less about the animals and their problems with other humans, its thier problem not mine. I have enough problems dealing with stupid humans, i don't need to go picking up their issues too.

Im just not going to eat meat because it rots your guts from the inside out, clogs your arteries full of rubbish and leeches the calcium from your bones.

Im not going to die fat, weak and wheezing 30 years too early. no thanks.

Supply and demand. One person not eating a steak is not going to stop companies from producing steaks, but if a group of people together do not buy steaks, the demand will go down and less steaks will be produced.

What you're professing is the same ideology that one vote doesn't change anything. It's true that one vote will not get someone elected, but a whole bunch of those "one votes" will.

You just answered your own question... by not eating an animal, I'm not eating an animal... full stop... law of supply and demand. If less people eat meat, less will be produced... Did you go to school?

Realistically, I don't think that I'm saving an animal by not eating a pre-packaged animal at the store, but choose not to eat meat because I don't want to contribute to that industry. I think what is done to animals is cruel and unnatural- so many hormones are pumped into animals before they are slaughtered.

I ate meat for the first eighteen years of my life, so I'm quite aware what I'm missing. Yes, I did enjoy certain foods, and I crave things sometimes, but to me it's completely worth it to not feel so sick to my stomach if I think about what I'm trying to eat that I have to stop.

For me, it's not about trying to save an animal. I think it's the natural order that humans eat meat. It is through the protein enriched brain development (from several evolutionary steps eating meat) that allows to even question whether we should eat it or not in the first place. Other than the horribly inhumane things (such as veal), I'm fine with people eating meat. I just don't want to. It's as simple as that.
